Anyone else afraid of doctors??? Talked to mine today...and I have been really scared ever since. Very scared. Not sure what to do or who to really talk to...or you feel like there is no one to talk to...or no one to trust. No one that will accept you if you do...

doctors are hit and miss. generally you will encounter the run of the mill doctor who frowns upon anything outside of basic living. be the average: bodyfat, composition, diet, exercise, lifestyle. moderation basically. moderation didnt get them through med school thats for sure. for athletes, its tough because a general practitioner usually wont understand peak performance and the price one has to pay to get it. so they shift back to moderation mode. if they start to lecture though.....im thinking "look elsewhere".

docs give me the creeps either way. you never know if they will say this or that for your best interest or whether they want another visit. i trust them to a point but im wary as well.

I'm working on getting accepted to med school right now and I work in a hospital as well. you should be afraid!!! I mean these guys really don't pay attention, all they want is to make money and the HMO's don't like extensive care..... Most of them know nothing of an athlete's life and how to approach it.... I would rather talk to a chiro and a physical therapist than a doctor.... BTW B what you doc say??? if you don't mind.... A guy I work with told me that I couldn't keep lifting and training at this rate or I would get really messed up:rolleyes:

Not really something that I am really ready to think about at the moment... It may be very hard for me to accept.

I am thinking that I need a 2nd opinion...but this one was fairly cheap at the free clinic.

Just sounds like they wanna make some money off you man. If it's about your back, didn't you say recently you had a friend who was a chiropractor?

ask him to refer u to a clinician who is better qualified to understand the needs of a sportsman

if it is bad news you do need to speak to people about it, to fully explore any options open to you....it will help them plan, and it will make things clearer to you as well

B, I've never been afraid of doctors, but finding a good one is very hard. I just recently changed doctors because the one I had been going to was overweight and older, and couldn't understand why I was working out, trying to gain weight, etc. Found a younger doctor who is more understanding.

If you've been told something serious...there's nothing wrong with getting a 2nd opinion, IMO.

Doctors ARE hit or miss. My dermatologist is awesome. He's a young guy, into working out, a great resource. We talk about my cycles (PH) and what not. I don't feel the need to keep things from him or anything. And he is into my behavior, doesn't condemn it or anything.

I have been to 2 Internists in the past 2 months and they both SUCKED! One sucked bad enough that I am complaining to my insurance company as well as the local medical society and health board. I just wish my dermo was an Internist.

Anyways they are obligated to treat you fairly and everything. None of them are out to hurt you. Just find one whose personality fits yours.

Lord Suston is right on. I'd say 80% of doctors really don't know crap, and if they do, they don't know how to apply it, or they don't care about appying it. The percentage of docs that are actually competent with athletic concerns is so low its silly.

Anyway b, personally, my answer is yes. Aside from physical(mechanical) problems I'm dealing with, I have a heart condition that I don't want to pursue just because I don't want to hear what it will mean. I refuse to listen to anyone telling me I have to stop doing something I love. I'll take the heart attack under the squat rack anyday over sitting on my ass watching TV(as long as I get the rep up first:) ).
