Any advice on how to beat the PMS cravings???

Okay, I never really used to get cravings like this, but my GOSH!!!!...I can't even think about something sweet without wanting to go get something.

I have been so good on my diet, too...but this daggum PMS is getting the best of me. I can't diet real good for 2 weeks and then eat like a pig for a week. That crap will get me nowhere.

I would really appreciate some advice on how you ladies manage to control these cravings. At this point...I would even pay for it! LOL

Fat. Some good fat always cures me. Like a whey shake with lots of udos. I'm usually craving salt though, not sweets.

...or you could take some R-ala and DIG IN! ;)

Sweet potato or yam - nuke it for 5-10 min.
Cut in half long ways and scoop out the inside.
Put in bowl, add 1-2 TBSP of fresh maple syrup and whip till smooth.

Eat hot or let it cool in the fridge and it becomes like a thick sweet pudding.

I dunno works for me.

:)

Nice, velvett! Sounds tasty!

Spatts, I'm going to have to do some research on the R-ala...I'm not too familiar with what it is and what exactly it does.

Thanks for the help...I just wonder if a protein shake would help satisfy it or if I would eat the protein shake in addition to the other crap.

Protein shake won't satisfy...nope. It's all the FAT you put in it that satisfies. :D

My Reesse's chocolate peanut butter oatmeal recipe is GREAT for you, and taste like cookie dough (to me).

1/2 cup raw oats, cover with water and nuk for 2 mins.

Add 1 cup of chocolate protein powder. If the oats are really dry, then add more water, or the protein will taste grainy or clumpy.

Add 1 TBS natural PB...crunchy or creamy (Smuckers)

2 packets Splenda, Stevia, Equal...your pick

Stir it up....YUM. :)

5-HTP kills my PMS cravings (and most of the bitchiness) dead. Serotonin levels drop during the luteal phase, so this makes sense.

If you absolutely positively must indulge anyway, r-ALA will minimize damage. It's almost magical how well that stuff works.

You know...I'm gonna have to get some of that stuff. I haven't heard anything but good things about it. Is it worth the money and how long does the stuff usually last?

Nuts..

Peanuts.. ;)

But if I crave sweets.. I will drink a very, I mean very small glass of wine.. It taste like sweet cherry wine.

And that takes my sweet tooth away..

I don't really like to drink much.. but this has help my sweet tooth.

Night Fly, I am with Ceebs on this one. 5-htp has been my saviour for all types of cravings - pms, low carb, etc. For me it works like a charm.

When I get a craving (which is usually in the evening) I take 1 50mg pill and 10 minutes later I have forgotten about food altogether.

1 bottle should last you pretty long, depending on how many you take. It is really cheap too.

You could also drink water when you get a craving. This helps some people, but not all :)

R-Ala is a lil pricey, but worth every penny!

I know what you mean too! One week before my period i get these uncontrolable cravings, i usually grab a couplea Balance (carmel nut) or Detour bars to help me... if you have time there are sooo many recipes in Muscle Mags. I picked up a "oxygen Fitness Magazine" the other day just cause there were some awesome recipes for sweets in there!

Frisco(good luck love)

Thank you all so very much! I finally started today (I'm sure you all really wanted to know that...LOL), so I woke up feeling nice and skinny (isn't that how is always works?). :)

Where can I get this 5-htp stuff? I think I may try that or get some R-ala, At any rate, thank you all so much for your input! The munchies got me this time, but I plan to be totally prepared next time! :)

I don't have too much money to spend on stuff, but if it will keep those cravings away, I think it would totally be worth every penny!

What has beenmy experience is that after a week on my new eating plan the cravings really do calm down. Keep in mind that sometimes just sitting there and "feeling the pain" can allow you to know that really you are ok and not in reality suffering.

And then there are the times when you need to just sit down and have your cookie-valerie

Um...nothing more to say about cravings, but Millie, I LOVE the avatar. Blood Sugar Sex Magic...it was the best.

Please excuse. ;)

woo hoo, spatts!! :D
i agreee, it is their best one... especially the song itself.... pure sex :p

and now that you mentioned it, i am getting a different kind of craving ;)

Maybe I am having a blonde moment, but what is 5-htp? My boyfriend has some R-ala but I have been scared to take it... I don't want to take something that makes me feel wierd inside?

5-htp helps your body to increase it's seratonin production. You can get it at any vitamin store or even in most drug stores and larger supermarkets.

When I have cravings I look in the mirror...that usually does it for me. LOL You could also try putting on a tight pair of pants as a reminder to behave yourself.

I used to have a grouping of pictures of some women on the board here that I printed from their galleries (Spatts, TrippleV, BrickGirl, and I forget who else) up on my fridge to remind me of my goals and to eat right. That really helped! Besides, it was beautiful to look at every day. ;)

Okay -- is that 1 cup not a scoop, right?

LOL! I was like WOW that will be thick. I am just not so much a sweets person (thank goodness for that!)....for example, I could have candy, Godiva chocolates etc etc in the house and never ever think or care to touch it. I don't put sweetner in my coffee, tea etc...and even if I go to Smoothie King and treat myself to an almond mocha shake, I ask to leave out the turnbinado.

Now, put a plate of french fries in front of me -- that is trouble.

I'm the same way. I crave salt, if anything.

I just find this concoction to be a bit bitter without the Stevia, but you may like it.

Newgirl-

Mad props to you for not wanting to touch sweets. I will devour the sweets WAY before I will touch the salty things...although if you put cashews in front of me I will eat the whole container.

1 cu. of protein powder...UGH...LOL. Good catch! :)

Tight pants tend to drive me towards the fridge in despair, unless the pants were tighter a week ago.

I've always wondered - what is it that makes some women crave sweet, and other women crave salt? Is it a hormone thing, a neurotransmitter thing, genetic like blood type, or something else entirely?

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've asked that question in here.

Maybe it's something as simple as the taste receptors on our tongues being more sensitive or plentiful in the "salt" area:

...hehehe, you know what they say about those girls with the big salt receptors. ;)

BTW, have you heard about the latest craze in "magic pills" that shuts off the sweet receptors for a period of time, so if you eat sweets, they don't taste like anything and you get over it? Interesting...

Ladies, I have found the cure to your chocolate cravings.

Miss Meringue Triple Chocolate Chip Meringue Cookies.

They are SOOOOOOO choclately rich that I could barely stomach eating two of them.

4 Cookies (good luck if you can eat that many):

90 Calories

20g Carbs

1g Protein

1.5g Total fat (.5 sat fat)

I found them at Target by the Pepridge Farm Cookies (you know, Sausalitos, Nantuckets, all your friends :D ).

Grrrrrr...chocolate makes me break out, even chocolate protein shakes. I can't win! I think Satan invented chocolate just to torture women.

"Maybe it's something as simple as the taste receptors on our tongues being more
sensitive or plentiful in the "salt" area:".................high brain levels of a hormone called vasopressin dramatically increase salt cravings at the same time it reduces sweet cravings. Vasopressin levels are elevated in the brain during the late luteal phase (ie prementrually). Another class of brain hormones (called tachykinins) can actually cause your taste response to salt and alcohol to diminish so that you no longer crave these. However having excess levels of these hormones may lead to depression and anxiety.... Additionally, there is some evidence that relative deficiency of serotonin or excess of dopamine can cause increase cravings (for salt AND sweet with serotonin, and salt for dopamine). There is also a genetic difference in one of the sweet taste bud receptors (ocurrs in ~30% of humans) that makes them like sweet stuff a LOT more than people with 'normal' sweet taste receptors. Relative estrogen deficiency (for instance in the premenstrual phase or when coming off of estrogenic OCs) also causes an increase in sweet AND fat cravings (and alcohol) :(

A very complicated topic for sure, but basically anything that can keep your estrogen or serotonin from plummeting will prolly help. This includes SSRIs, tryptophan or 5HTP, continuous OC use, reduction of caffeine, blah blah blah. Or maybe it is easiest to just allow yourself SOME extra sweets, but try to limit them (since carbs are an excellent way to increase serotonin). As the saying goes, a little of what you fancy is good for you.

What is your diet like the rest of the week though?
