This is something i have been wrestling with for some time.
First off i am 6'3 in height, 240lbs @ 15% BF currently, but going down each year:) J/K. I have very wide shoulders and can put muscle with out that much trouble BUT am not very strong be comparison to other people. I have noticed on my past cycles that i made MUCH better gains when i trained with medium weights and higher reps, 8-20, also got mind blowing pumps.

But in the years past i always used the "you must train HEAVY" approach that got me nowhere, as i got neither big nor very strong. But with the high reps with medium weights i always get sore and grow with each workout.

Take my chest for example, it gows and pumps easily but i never had a big bench. 275x10 was my best, but my pecs were huge, easily the biggest in the gym, if you guys saw pumping iron with arnold doing the db flys in the beginning, that gives you an idea of my pec size/shape. But again seems like my chest is very weak.

So this is my question.

Does anyone train with medium weights and high reps and get goos results?

Is this an inducation of my fiber makeup in the muscle? I have always been very fast for my size, if that helps. I am constantly torn between lifting "MAcho" or "smart".

BTW:

I have noticed that Arnold used what seemed like moderate weights for his size as did Ferrigno.

Overall, you are a big guy with longer limbs. When it comes to presses, squats, or anything. . . .you have a hell of a long way to travel. Heavy iron may be ill suited for your structure, as the length of your limbs provide a mechanical disadvantage. However, you can fatigue your muscle bellies with higher reps 8-12 and moderate weight, which you are doing. It sounds like you are doing just fine. All I can say is keep doing what is best for you. All of our bodies are built differently, so we will all respond to different training methods. Good luck!!

You sound like me. I do moderate weights/higher reps out of necessity because I workout at home with shitty equipment and have had results similar to you.
Compared to the size of my chest, my bench sucks, yet I have good size and shape. Same with squats-I have to do higher reps, medium weight since I have no rack, etc. and tend to get similar results also. However because of my situation, I practice perfect controlled form on all exercises and really feel the muscle working in each set. When one uses too heavy of a weight, some tend to compromise form, at least somewhat, and don't really reap the full beneifts of using a more moderate weight-works for me, but might not work with others. Weightlifting is all about experimentation and seeing what works for you..........
