Lifting heavy doesn't make your waist big. If you have a 'big' waist and thick core already, then you'll be able to lift heavier than someone with a frail midsection but to correlate the other way is like saying that playing bball makes you taller, because tall guys play bball.
to put it in context look at the classic bbers from the 50's through to the 80's, all the guys who looked amazing and who didn't have huge growth & slin guts..they all squatted, and heavy. Even 'little' frank zane wrote about doing multiple sets of 20 with 315 back in the day.. arnie, over 500 for reps, platz would lift weights that most powerlifters would stuggle with raw.
The only way to guarentee you have a narrow waist, reguardless of exercise choice, is to be black. That way you'll likely have a favorable waist to hip ratio and a lower chance of storing abdominal fat.
Another thing is to be realistic, Natural Mr O john hansen goes on stage with a 33" waist. Now the bullshit online might have you believe that's 'huge' but here's how it looks http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/johnh_4_big.jpg
p.s. I actually AM fat now, I haven't dieted for a year and havent really squatted or deadlifted heavy either for a long long time thanks to injuries.. switching to front squats and the leg press didn't make my core any svelter sadly
