A+ Certification

Don't know about job prospects, but I'm A+ certified, an easy two test, I think I studied about 12 hours the Sunday before I took both tests in about 45 minutes Monday.

A+ is a good ground floor fundamental certification to have in the IT field. While it can really amount to little on it's own, it's most important contribution is it prepares you for the mind set to move upward in the IT career field if you are new to computers. I never studied at all for it. If you get it, you can easily get a job as a hardware installer technician and then use the company's paid training to learn other stuff.

I have A+, MCSE (didn't study for it either), MSDBA (didn't study for it either) and OCP (studied my ass off - it is BRUTAL!!)

From A+ I would suggest moving to UNIX admin and then on to NT Admin. From there you can decide if you like networking, programming, web design, or whatever.

A+ is a introductory certification, as far as job advancement goes, it'll help you out getting a job in tech support or a hardware technician. At the same time it is a easy test and if you can get your employer to pay for the tests(when I took them 128 a test, two tests) then it can prove to be a learning experience and gets you used to what the tests look like.

The real money lies in Cisco and Linux/Unix. If you are Solaris certified and know your stuff you can pull in pretty good money, same goes for Cisco. Microsoft certs are well, rather tepid these days since everybody and anybody seems to have them, plus all the paper MCSE's have watered it down. Unfortunately there are MCSE's that really do know there stuff but just get labelled as "oh, he's probably just another paper MCSE".
