i was considering a lot of these things. boston has had a rough week, kC is playing for respect.

much psychological in team sports
KC was mired in a 19 game losing streak
won against long odds in oakland against zito
then followed up with an extra innings win the next day
playing "spoiler" late season energizes many poor teams
esp. if they are largely composed of youngsters
