5x5 been doing it for a wile now.

how long have you been doing it? I assume you're doing the basic 5x5 (linear I think it's called)? Have you stopped adding weight to the bar when you're supposed to? If so, have you taken any time off (a week or two) or de-loaded at all?

How long before I should do something else? What else is a good training program?

There is no set time, stay with it for as long as you can add weight to the bar. When you can't or feel you need a rest, take a week or two to deload, decrease the volume, do easy stuff, then reset the weight's and start again.

The 5x5 is not a cookie cuter program, there is no such thing. It's designed to teach you about training, after being on it for a while, deloading when you need to, you should have learned enough about training that you will know your body and know how to make gains/ make it grow. When the intermediate stops given you gains, even after resetting etc, move on to the advanced 5 x 5 where you have different phases, PR's don't come as often as the intermediate.

I have been doing the basic 5x5 for a little over a year. I always take 1-2 weeks
off then start over. Is it better that I de-load? Gains are almost nothing now even after a few weeks of and back on again.

If that is the case, and you're stalling even after taking some rest and/ or deload, you may have to use the dual factor "Advanced" 5 x 5 to make gains.

It's on the madcow 5 x 5 website under advanced.

I'm a n00b but, how are you eating? Perhaps you should consume more calories...
I eat really good. 1.5 grams protein for every bl of lean body mass. Most of my meals are low in fat other then fats from meat, fish, peanut butter, and flax when I can.

I keep carbs clean and around mid range. Oatmeal, potatoes, yams, some pasta, and veggies. I do get sick of eating the same stuff all the time,so I will cheat now and again.

Most of the time my cals are dead set around 2700 every day. I am around 230lbs right now so I would think thats enough cals right?

It really depends on what activities you do throughout the day. How many calories you're burning.

But on a side note 1.5g/bw is too much protein if you ask me. Your body can't process that much protein so the rest is just a waste.

have you tried varying anything? You won't benefit too much from doing the same exact thing over and over. Play with the rep ranges, exercise variation, etc.

lol...know what made me start growing again? 2+ grams per pound of bodyweight (not LBM) and moderate good fats, with relatively low carbs.

Wulfgar consumes up to 3 grams per pound of bodyweight (800 grams at 270 lbs.) at times. He'll eat about 60 grams every hour.

1.5 grams /lb is too much if you're a typical american couch potato who never sees the inside of a gym and sits behind a desk all day.

How many PL'ers and BB'ers do you know - who ACTUALLY LOOK like PL'ers and BB'ers - who eat like normal people and still look like BB'ers and PL'ers?

Would be nice though huh? To be 250 lbs. at 12% or less bodyfat and eat the normal 2000-2500 calorie diet as every other 160 lb. guy out there. That'd save me a ton of money on food!!!

So the only thing you changed was more protein? Interesting.

no. I started doing DC training. Actually, the key for me is higher fat (and protein) intake. I made the mistake of letting something a gym buddy of mine said get into my head. He said I looked like I got bigger and I told him I changed my training and diet. Told him about high protein, moderate fat lower carbs and I gained like 10-12 lbs in 12 weeks. Then said that I hadn't gained any more since then (it had only been another 3-4 weeks at that point)...he said I needed more carbs, OMG, my body is just lacking fuel, blah blah...

So, I made the mistake of increasing my carbs, and since I don't eat fats with carbs, I consequently lowered my fat intake. Now, it's been about 4 months since I've gained anything. :( I just started going back to what made me gain.

So, no, not just protein, but protein is what you need to build muscle. Like I said, we (PL'ers and BB'ers) have MUCH greater caloric needs than ordinary people. I've never known any of us that can become 250+ lb. monsters on a 2000-2500 calorie normal person's diet. I suppose there are some genetic freaks out there that would grow to 250lbs. drinking water and eating bread though.

Diet is a very individualized thing. There are generalities that everyone can follow, but for dialing it in after you reach a certain level and are trying to push beyond, you gotta tailor it to the individual.

What strength do you want? Do you want to deadlift 700lbs? you have to get pretty specific otherwise it's not going to happen. List everything you want out and people can help you more easily.
