HOUSTON-A judge threw a 17-year-old 11th grade honor student from Willis High School in jail after she missed school again. Judge Lanny Moriarty said last month Diane Tran was in his Justice of the Peace court for truancy and he warned her then to stop missing school. But she recently missed classes again so Wednesday he issued a summons and had her arrested in open court when she appeared. Tran said she works a full-time job, a part-time job and takes advanced placement and dual credit college level courses.

Awesome logic this country has. Or is it racial double standard. Yeah she really looks like a bad apple

17 yr old Asian girl shows well above the norm work ethic and sense of responsibility, taking classes also well above the norm and gets burnt out...arrested and thrown in jail. Inner city youth skips school to be typically out doing drugs/causing trouble...school provides counseling or could end up facing a lawsuit.

Love the comments too.

I'm sorry...I try to stay away from Chat but WTF??? Sometimes it makes me embarrassed to be an american when shit like this happens...that is absolutely absurd! I wish my teen and hope that my youngest had that kind of drive and work ethic, she may have been able to have handled it differently but jail??? Fucking justice system once again!

they need some sort of recourse against people who skip school, and you can't apply the laws selectively. I'm curious to know if she attempted to work out some sort of arrangement with the school beforehand. Or why her foster parents couldn't call out sick for her. how many days has she missed?

I shared this on my FB page. I don't agree with it...
while the black and white aspect of it is the same laws for everyone..mitigating AND aggravating circumstances weigh in as well in all courts for all cases
also..if you read some of the comments this particular judge has some ludicrous truancy standards

if i had a legit reason for missing school repeatedly, i would've talked to the school about it beforehand

That judge is an idiot. My favorite part if this whole thing is that the first thing everyone jumps to is "racism", as long as the so called victim in a situation is not white. If they're black, don't get me started on the shit storm that one starts.

The judge said if he let her slide it would set a bad example for the other students.

To me she sounds like a good example.

Personally I believe kids who show initiative like that and maintain a high GPA should be allowed to miss school to work and attend extra studies not offered by the high school.

Shits just ass backwards.

all she has to do is unenroll in school.. oh wait, she's getting free college credits, and the other problem is if she is not in the seat, the school does not get paid for that person on that day.. so

susan needs more daycare for her 3rd kid, while she goes to classes, ya'll gots to be helping raise all these kids..
