Been on a paleo type diet for a couple weeks now.... I've lost 13 lbs in a couple weeks and was curious as to how much is water... i'm 5'8 about 240(after 8 lbs lost).. any suggestions????

I would guess approximately half of it.

Have you lost a noticeable amount of bloat? You should be able to gauge this better than anyone else.

I can't tell what's bloat and what is fat.. i feel like i lose water from my face first.. standing 5'8 at 239 as of this morning.. wanting to get down to about 200 lbs..

Most. Nobody can give you an exact number without testing you before hand and afterward.

Scales suck, measure yourself with calipers and the eyeball test.

I've done the Atkins/Protein Power/Paleo diet three different times.

The first thing that happens each time (to me,) is loss of water weight--and I mean A LOT OF WATER WEIGHT. During the first week alone I would lose 10 pounds. It is almost certainly water weight and not much else, unless you have a caloric deficit of 5000 calories a day!

You can also tell if it's water weight if you have diarrhea and/or massive and frequent urination.

I have some opinions to offer on this type of diet:

The first time I did it (SOLELY for weight loss, as I was not lifting at all during this time...had an injury,) it worked like a charm. I lost 55 pounds in 3 months. BUT, I couldn't maintain the "no bread, no pasta, no sugar, no enjoyment of food" required to stay on the diet long term. I gained back the weight slowly, over the next 2 years.

The 2nd time I did the Paleo diet, I had started lifted again after my injury was healed up. Again, I lost a ton of fat. HOWEVER, I began to feel a little "brain fog" and noticed I didn't seem as energized in the gym. Slowly, my lifting strength began to decline--this occured EVEN THOUGH I was ingesting at least 250 grams of protein and around 4-5000 calories per day. It turns out that for me, this type of diet is horrible for gaining muscle, maintaining strength, having mental accuity, etc.

I never bought into the idea that carbs were essential to training; I bought into the hook that all your body needs is protein and fat.

But my training showed me otherwise.

I went back to adding-in complex carbs and my strength and muscle gains shot right up.

Fast-forward a few more years-- I had injured my back, and had to lay off weight training for quite some time. I started to question my Paleo diet experience-- "Was it really that bad? Maybe I wasn't being strict enough?"

I tried it again just a few months ago. I had the same experience; I peed like crazy, lost a ton of water weight. But I was completely fatigued when trying to do cardio or lift. I continued with the diet for 3 weeks. Then one day, I broke down and ate some carbs....a bowl of cereal, a baked potato, beans. The next morning, I went to lift and I felt like Superman! I increased weight big-time on my lifts, and had an enormous amount of energy.

Since then, I have followed a diet comprising about 40% protein, 30% carbs, and 30% fat. I have continued to lose weight while retaining all my strength and energy.

I am not sharing my story to say, "Don't do this", I just want to let you know that you may experience some of the negative side effects I did. I hope your diet works out for you--I think you WILL lose weight. But don't freak out if one day you eat a plate of pasta or a piece of bread and gain 5 pounds...simply adding-in a large carb meal will instantly cause you to retain water for at least 24 hours. But if you lower your carbs again, the weight will come back off.

Good luck with your diet and exercise plan!
