is this a plausible way for mono to be spread (chris??)

someone with mono drinks rum straight from the bottle. Then some time later he pours a bunch of people drinks from the bottle. Are the people who took the drinks at risk?

doesn't seem very likely....I've had mono before and you're only contagious for a one week period or something close to that. Usually by the time you realize you have mono, you don't know it until your not contagious anymore. I found out I had mono after about a month or so after I initially got it. Pouring it out of a bottle seems even less likely...

Why, ya gat the mono?

Smurf's got it, Epstein Barr virus spreads like a mofo. And sharing a drinking vessel with someone is a sure fire way to transfer it. EBV is an enveloped virus that can be inactivated by stuff like alcohol and bleach, but alcohol is not nearly as effective on viruses as it is for bacteria.

Honestly, the only way to know about the poured drinks is to see what happens.

Here's the thing about Epstein Barr tho... People have varying susceptibilities which is probably why myway doesnt ever remember getting sick, but if we drew a titer on her, there'd be a +95% chance of having an IgG antibody. Some peeps get sick. Some dont. But almost all of us are exposed to it by the time we're adults. And its like chicken pox, once your exposed, your most likely not to experience symptoms again.

Great job, doc. Yea, I don't get symptoms from "normal" stuff. I don't get colds or tummy flu stuff. BUT I had a positive tb skin test from an exposure on the ambulance. My chest xray was negative but they had me on Isoniazid for almost a year.
I also had Influenza A(prolly got it at work,2) and then I got shingles WHILE I had influenza A.
Wow. Rough year.
O-yea. Almost forgot about the organophoshate poisoning from the old lady trying to make insecticide in her garage. She died. The paramedics and firefighters got a trip to the hospital and some shots and fluids. I was puking the whole way to the hospital and I lost about 3 gallons of snot from my nose. Way HAWT. I know.

Gahhh it's a bitch to test TB positive on the tuberculin skin test.... Fucking annual CXR's for you for the rest of your career. :(

thanks guys. i should be more specific. the drinks were poured into glasses, so nobody actually shared a drinking vessel

chances are probably pretty low for any adults who had a drink poured out of it.
  1. the etoh inactivates the virus
  2. most adults have relative immunity to the virus
  3. minimal/if any direct contact with saliva from host
