Grip strength is bad!!!

After I quit work doing electrical my grip strength has gone to shit. I was deadlifting 400 at one point and now can't get 335 up because my grip sucks. Also for some reason straps don't help. So I was wondering what are the best two grip exercises to do? I don't want ones that just allow you to close grippers. Ive tried doing like wrist roll exercises and wrist curls, but just go backwards in strength and it doesn't make sense. Maybe I should just start using nut drivers and wire cutters more.

Pull-ups never really helped me pick up heavier weight, but it did help me with endurance. I think the db rows would be the same way because I doubt I could do more that 100 in each hand. Also i forgot to mention something else. I was just picking up the heaviest dumbbell possible and holding it as long as I could, but I realized that I could hold it in my right hand about 3 times longer. I was wondering if I should quit with training my right hand grip tell my left caught up. Do those CoC grippers actually carry over to heavy deads? I was thinking about getting some anyways, but right now I'm so tight on money it might be impossible.

They will carry to heavy deads as long ans your erector chain can pull the weight.

I use them for grip strength, chalk, and a well etched Q bar and I can pull well over 500 lbs for reps - no straps.

If you want stronger grip on deadlifts then do deadlifts without straps. What kind of grip are you using? Double over hand, reverse grip, hook grip? You can do some static stuff to help but grippers are really only going to help your crushing grip.

I've used them and like i said its pretty much just a feat of strength. Not sure how much carry over you really get but alot of guys tell me it just makes you good at closing grippers. Maybe bfold will pop in he might have some insight.

All I can say is that they work for me. But that said, in a way I do consider them auxiliary to doing the actual movement the grip is needed for. When I do use them, each time I close them I hold them closed for a count of 7-10 then release. When you DL you don't open and close your grip on the bar repeatedly while lifting....

I am also fortunate enough to have huge meathooks for hands, and can very easily wrap my fingers over my thumb when I grip a 28mm bar in effect creating a grip strap of sorts.

As I said before chalk and good knurling will dramatically help you keep hold of the bar.

you're probably right handed bro

Exactly. I think doing static holds on deads for max effort helps with grip for deads. I remember Scotsman stating somthing similiar.

Straps are ok IMO. If you're not a powerlifter (which I am) then using them in liu of a mixed grip can prevent bicep injuries whent he weigh gets heavy. I only use straps for rack pulls, and I rack pull 150-200lbs more than I dead.

I have been told and totally agree that closing gripper only help with closing grippers.

Yeah I'm right handed, and I guess I'll just lighten up the deads and do more of them which I hate to do. It sucks that deads used to be my best and now they are 2nd.
Thanks for the replies!

Can't really do the farmers walk right now because of where I'm working out at. I could definitely tell that those short amount of deads really worked my forearms because today they are actually kinda sore. Today I didn't do them though because another guy was on the only real squat rack at the gym, at least this time he was doing squats and not like the idiots yesterday using it for dumbbell curls for 40 min. Still got in the squats though thank god.

The grippers can help, but don't kill yourself by getting a super strong one. I use my lighter ones for timed holds mostly, I think it has the best carry over to deads and farmers walk.

But I've never lost a deadlift due to grip either, and I've nearly pulled 770 now. I've done a partial with 880 without straps too. In the past I used to do Martial Arts and spent hours and years using a bo staff which helped, I have long fingers, and for a couple years my ONLY bar in my home gym was a 2" bar.

Well I guess I'll get a pair after I get out of NY and my hands are pretty small which sucks. I probably couldn't do a hook grip if I wanted to.

this is what has helped me, though it tears the fug outta your hands.
with two fingers on the smooth and two on the rough, i bunch my upper hand tissue (right below were the finger leaves the hand) below the bar...so the bar kinda sits on the skin roll.
does that make sense? if i don't do this the bar slips.
pulled quite a bit like this

I'm just curious, because I read a lot of media hype when the strongman grippers first came out....they claimed that if you can close the #3 gripper, you can crush most hands, if you close the #2 gripper, you will get an extremely powerful grip...etc....do these grippers make such a massive difference in getting a much stronger handshake? we had a top level executive talk about them as work for some odd reason lol

I would have to say, yes. The main action of them is a crush style of grip which is different than grabbing a bar - you don't crush a bar. However, a lot of the same muscles are used for a bar grip, so the closest approximation is to close an hold these grippers.

so technically, if I used those grippers for a few months, my hand shake will be crushing...lol I like the sound of that

If straps dont work I would say you;re not using them right. For grip strength either just keep working or when you get to say your last deadlift rep, just hold it at the top until you can't hold it anymore. When I am doing a bodybuilding type routine I use wraps for any set where the numer of reps I get will be hindered by my grip. If I am lifting PL style I try not to use wraps until I really can't pick up the weight. I'm also usually doing singles or close to it with.

Yes.

It is a great way to get someone's attention and keep it for as long as desired.

I've done it to two of my daughter's "boyfriends."

It didn't take them long to completely understand what I was saying and agree with it.

lol...nice

I have a pretty strong grip, but it's not "crushing"

Something that I would like to add that has help me recently. One armed deadlifts. I do them after my regular DLs. I set up just like a reg deadlift with the bar in front of me and grip the bar on the middle knurling. I usually warm up with trips at 135 and then I will do timed holds with 185 or 205. These fry my forearms and my grip is improving. Especially on chins and Rows. I usually strap up on my Dl work sets, but I am sure these would help tremendously if you pulled without straps. If you need motivation there are videos of Mark Felix pulling 405 and 440 with one hand. What a beast.

Yeah I was trying to do those with dumbbells, but had problems with 100 lbs. and it's really sad. I should have never stopped doing deadlifts.

Also I'm sure I was using the straps properly, but I just think they are crappy. I think they are made by Tko and don't get many wraps around the bar and the material is really thick.

Try DB rows as an assistance lift. Try three to five sets of ten to twelve reps. On your last set rep out as many as possible. This should be an all out set with each arm. i usually rest two to three minutes between each arm on the rep out set. When you get to 20 reps with your target weight up the weight by 5 pounds and start over. These will pump the absolute shit out of your forearms, biceps, and especially your lats.

For the mathematically challenged, that last pull by Felix was for 893 lbs.

Lets just say that is a bit out of my league. As in Holy fuck that is a lot of weight to pull!

Feliz is one of if not the greatest deadlifts to ever walk the face of the earth. AND to top it off, he is like 43 years old.

He is a fucking beast!!!

What about the 471 one armed pull at the start of the video?! What the fuck??? 300 on a rolling thunder?! I doubt I could 100 on it lol.

What Bblazer said.

Also where are you placing the bar in the hand? When my hand is closed the bar rests on top of the calluses - makes it much easier. I can static hold 750 like that (then the calluses get pulled off!!).

I just bought some CoC grippers - 1 upto 3. Interested to see what I can do but aren't expecting much!

I can almost close a #2 & I have been working at it for a while now.

The knurling on the handles really toughen up your hands too.

The gym I'm working out at now has brand new bars and I just try to get my hands as far as I can around the bar since they are small. Unfortunately I'm leaving New York Friday and the gym I normally work out at has really shitty bars. It seems like they bought them used or something there is literally no knurling on them like it was filed off. I almost want to bring my own bar, plyo box, and box squat box, but I guess I can't complain to much for a $10 membership. Only if 24 wasn't like $40 and was actually open 24 hours a day.

Felix has huge fuckin hands. When i shook his hand it pretty much wrapped all the way around mine and i dont exactly have small hands.

Anyone know were I could buy these grippers? I would only get the #1 and I dont even know if I could close that... what do you think? a 14 year old be able to close a #1? How hard are they?

Those straps you mentioned suck big time, I use Altus straps made in China much better than those, the only problem is that they fucking rip my wrist skin off.

Yeah what I figured, but I thought it could just be me. The funny thing is they cost more than the Iron Mind raps.

Ironmind Enterprises

If you order one get the "trainer" model. The number one is tough. I have a solid grip and I work with the number one. The trainer is tough but manageable. You should be able to close the trainer, but I doubt for many reps. The best thing would be to buy a "trainer" and a "number 1", but I know your a broke ass high school n00b  so get the trainer if you decide to buy one.

If you do anything....request one of their catalogues. They are very cool.

Ah thanks bro. And low reps (even if it is near failure) would be better for strength anyway would it?

Im thinkin of gettin off my fat brit ass and gettin a job anyway

With the grippers I like to mix it up. High reps, low reps with holds, etc. I basically play around with them. No real set routine.

Yes, I said low reps because you said I wouldnt be able to close them for many reps even if I wanted to, so I meant well anyway only doing them to low reps would build more strength so maybe its not such a downside....
