So one of the guys in our office has a part time assistant that organizes paperwork and other low end stuff for him. She is a 25 year old Latino girl with a 11 year old, a 9 year old, a 6 year old, and a 4 year old. She just got married to a guy who is the father of none of them (2 other folks fathered her various children).

I overhear her often talking about how her and her husband are broke, their phone was shut off, etc which I always feel bad about because she's a decent enough girl.

Yesterday I asked her how her vacation was, and she tells me her and her husband just got the ball rolling on the in vitro process. Seriously.

I can understand that if you get preggo accidentally when you're broke and not wanting a shmushmorshin for personal reasons, but come on.

Does this make sense to anybody here?

No, Why do they feel like they even need to do in vitro? Shes still young, and obviously fertile plus she has plenty of time to save up some money she is only 25.

Does it make sense to me, personally? Fuck no. I had one, I made my contribution to the gene pool.

However, I also realize that some women are "into" babies the way other women are into cats (fucking kids are noisy, smelly and sticky, IMO) and for some women reproducing is the only way they have of validating themselves, it's the only thing they are good at or really qualified to do. That doesn't mean I approve or applaud their behavior, unfortunately some of this stems from old acculturalization shit, your basic man = god/women = breeder mentality.

But I do t think they even had that checked. I think they just tried for a month, it didn't happen, so they figure max out their credit cards and borrow money from family in order to do this.

I thought it was a 3 part process, most insurance covers part 1 & 2 and the thrid one is the one that is like $15k...
I don't remember I never had that problem, I have 4 so far...
 
I dont know why a young healthy male would even have to know what one of the many different types of fertility treatments are

Basically - this was the root cause of the problem. Funny stuff.
 
In vitro is on stop on the baby train right before adoption.

It's one of the last resorts for people who absolutely want to have a kid right now.

And yeah, she's borrowing money from a few different people to get this accomplished. But yes, insurance does cover a portion of it.

Dude, what kind of fucking cave have you been in? There is absolutely no way you can't know what in vitro fertilization is unless you've never listened to the news, never read a newspaper headline and didn't graduate from a public school in the past 20 years.

for one you are a mother i assume? I would also assume it is normal for a MOTHER to know these things? I have no kids not planning for kids, how in the FUCK am i suppose to learn about this??? I dont have cable tv and dont read the newspaper, unless its world news, WTF would i waste my damn time reading about some fucking fertilization bullshit?!?!?!?! explain that to me, there is absolutly no REASON, im not a woman and im not worried about having a kid right now through some egg sperm fertilization?!? give me a fucking break, I gratuated high school 8 years ago and went into the military and spent almost all 4 years over seas, Vitro was our main topic of conversations in our base while we were getting shot with mortars....

I agree 100% ....I had my one and im done....love the kid to death, but dosent mean I want another one. Some women.....check that...most women are fucking kid crazy....thats all they want.....is to have kids and stay home raising them.....I guess its thier "motherly duty" or something....my soon to be exwife once said thats what she wants to do.....be a stay at home mom and raise a bunch of kids.....i just dont get that

Vitro is Latin for "glass". In vitro means "in glass", as in "test tube"...in vitro fertilization = "test tube baby". You've probably heard and used the phrase, test tube baby at least a few times in your life, right? Now you know where it comes from.

Motherhood has nothing in the world to do with any knowledge I have of in vitro fertilization or anything else. I got pregnant the old fashioned way at the ripe old age of 19.

No, housemusic, I get curious about shit and start Googling or Wikipedia-ing stuff, or (horror of horrors) I'll crack a book or read a news magazine or go to the library and see what people are writing about. I watch freaking PBS or listen to NPR, both of which are freely available. When I see a word I've never heard before I look it up in a dictionary. Everything I've learned is pretty much the result of my curiosity.

Ignorance is nothing to be proud of or to flaunt. Do yourself a favor, get a library card and start it. Brains can get flabby and atrophy just as muscles. And here's a little secret, dear boy, your brain will take you much further in life than your muscles ever will.

well that makes you that much better than me then MM.... Because when it comes to reading, or researching i am lazy... going to the library is probably never going to happen, just being honest... I am going to start school again first time in 7-8 years and it scares the shit out of me... maybe that will change me? but right now, it still doesnt justify getting on me for not knowing the term "vitro" because apparently i am not the only one....

well i think that the egg is from the mother and the sperm is either from the father or from someone else.

So the kid would more thank likely know their parents

but i dont know crap about it. Hopefully i wont ever have to know anything about fertility treatments EVER!

I'm surprised that a 25 year old would be willing to go through this process...especailly one who already has kids...I mean they shoot you full of hormones, everyday, you'd think they'd try for a year first at least.

I think you still only have a 50-60% chance of it even working after all of that.

lol to be honest - thats what I had to do. I knew in vitro was a fertility treatment but I had no idea which one so I googled it right quick before I answered his question.

Brains are much like muscles in a lot of ways. Start using yours, stretch it, force it to work and it will get easier. Start reading books NOW for pleasure before you go back to school. If you have no joy for reading or research then you are going to be one sad puppy in school. Just like any other endeavor, you need a passion to learn to excell at it.

Why bother going to school at all if you have no love of knowledge?

I have plenty of love for knowledge, we are not talking about math or world history here, we are talking about fertilization, If maybe i was in a case that i was involved in that subject then yes i would of done my required research... but i knew about test tube babies because ive heard it before just never the term "Vitro"... And to answear your question, in this life we all live in, without an education you arent going very far in life.. So we can all agree me registering for college is a step towards the right path? regardless if i like to study or read books, because i dont? but trust me i have done way harder things in my life, and Like anything else that ive been through in and out the Marine Corps, I will adapt and overcome :p
 
To think there are people in America who would LOVE to have a baby, and go through paperwork hell and thousands of dollars to adopt a baby overseas (adopting in us is impossible) and they spit out babies (it is expected in mexican culture) like it's a fad.

I believe that to be on welfare, every woman should be required to have a birth control shot at the time of picking up her check in person. Now if you are just "poor" but are holding down a job and want more kids, that its a stupid idea,but if it makes you happy go ahead as long as you are going to be resposible.

My kids are the most amazing, life changing thing that has every happened to my wife and I. I got a vasectomy a few years back and I regret it. I am fortunate to be making a good living at the moment,but if that were to take a turn for the worse, I would still want my right to have more children if I so desired. If the government (TAXES) were going to pay for my kids, I wouldnt even consider having them,.
 
Why don't you ask her about it rather then speculate? That way, you can understand the context of her situation. For example, I speculate that you're a racist. I'm going to ask you about it at my 10 year anniversary here right before I kill myself.

Ya she got started young. Then again, my wifes parents had her older brother at 14 as well.

But you're right, I should show her my paycheck and blame her and her Chillin for the amount taken out in taxes.

It's got 75th written all over it. I couldn't decide if I should laugh or cry during the movie. The only inaccuracy was they forcasted 500 years into the future and I'm thinking it's more like 100 at most.

Where did she get the $25k for the proceedure?? i guess you now know where her money goes.. and why your group insurance premium just went up..
 
To be honest, my feelings are mixed. I do believe that if one is on welfare then they should NOT be given any increase if they have more kids. You want kids, then YOU pay for them. But I was also a welfare mother for no more than 2 years after my divorce. Funny so many judged me for how I supported myself and my children for a short period of time before I chose a secretarial/gym opener/certified fitness professional where I was FORCED to apply for welfare benefits to support my four children (all conceived in marriage to ONE MAN - marriage spanned 11 years) even though I worked full-time and was receiving *some* child support from my exhusband. But it seems that so many more judge those mothers who are on welfare. Ya'll can't BEGIN to imagine the burden of shame - for nearly EVERY situation of my adult life... but hey, I bore it gladly while I had my girls.

Anyways, I also had NO DESIRE to have any more children once I separated/divorced their father. I mean, in a fantasy way - YES as I LOVE LOVE LOVE children. But not actually enough to do something FOOLISH to fulfill that fantasy.

And now I am married to a very loving man. But we are both too old... Ya'll don't know how much it saddens me that I didn't meet him 20 years ago and chose HIM to father the only children I will ever have, the ones that I haven't had for nearly 3 years, the ones that though they were born healthy, normal, gifted to a loving, capable and fit mother have been slowly and systematically destroyed in every imaginable way.... and now I can't have anymore.

Could I try? Yea, but the cost financially, emotionally and physically would be too great for both me AND my husband. Hell, the costs just trying to get my existing children back are inconceivable on all fronts... even to us and we are living it.

I suppose that I do feel on the one hand that the couple in question is very immature but on the other hand if they have found NON-TAXPAYER money to fund their *fantasy* then who are we to judge? Would I want that life for any of my 4 daughters? NO... but if the man is good to her and they are good parents then I suppose this isn't the worst situation for them.

(How is THAT for lowering my hopes and expectations for my children? :( )
