so Im connected to the nets no problem...but the connection icon on the lower right hand side shows a red x through it and if I open the networking screen it doesn't show networks

looks like an unused network connection was built.. delete the one that is not working and you'll be fine..

On windows 7, right click the red x, click "open nework center"
On the right you will see connections.
If there is a Local area connection, right click it and disable.
Then right click and disable the wireless connection.
The re-enable the wireless connection.

ok...I deleted all the connections and rebooted the computer for good measure; All is right with the world now.

seems to be running reeeeeeeally slow tho. One of these days if I can ever afford it I'm gonna drop it off somewhere and have all its crap cleaned up. Laptops are stupid expensive for what they are.
