Absolutely correct.
I moved to a professional line camera body with boss lenses and you can definitely tell the difference in image quality and features of a full frame body.
Having said that, the image quality and value of a t2i at this point is nearly unbeatable for what it would cost you.
As it happens, I'm looking to sell my t2i with the kit 18-55 lens. It has about 5000 pictures taken on it (that's low for a used camera, not super low, but finely not even average use) and it's about 1 1/2 years old. I bought it new.
If you are interested in buying it, I'm willing to ship it out.
yeah, buy the body and spend the rest of your money on a quality lens.
If you're gonna use it strictly for portraits go with like the 50mm f1.2L and the t2i
when you get better you can upgrade to a FF body and still use your nice lens.
The rebel camera body is up to snuff. I'd spend 800-$1k on an "L" series lens.
The optical quality of an l series lens is worth the money over an 1k body and $400 lens.

I personally find no reason to spend the extra on a 1.2 over a 1.4 50mm.
As much as a 50mm is the perfect focal length for portraits on a rebel body (smaller sensor) he is going to want more than one focal length.
The 50mm 1.4 is optically very good. I have one. And it's only $350
I'd buy a 50mm f1.4 and a 70-200 f4 L to give him an optically excellent lens with more reach and flexibility.
I've even shot portraits at 300mm focal length, you just have to stand far back. Sometimes being more "candid" produces more natural expressions with not having a camera right in your face.
I could do $300 including the kit lens. That's actually a really good deal. That lens won't fit my pro body. You'd have to pay shipping, whatever $20ish dollars it would cost.
I was asking locally for $375 on the classifieds but I can hook a brother up. You'll find faggots asking the same for $600 because they think their stuff is made out of gold. Lol.

I'm telling you, you do not need to spend the money for a 1.2.
The 1.4 is very good. Hell, even the $90 1.8 is "good enough" but it's cheap plastic shizz.
But, since you still have $800 in your budget, get the 70-200 f4 L for about $600 and you have a fantastic beginner set up within your budget.

Because Canon is notorious for price gouging the shizz out of People with "additional features" they add on to updated models.
The 70-200 f4 l non is, is a very good value.
IS means Image Stabilization. It reduces blur at slow shutter speeds by keeping the internals of the lens more stable.

Nikon is a great brand, as is Canon. They are the two leading brands in the world.
Canon's optics in their lenses are way better.
The Nikon bodies have completely different ergonomics, and Canon is much easier to work, important for a beginner.
Nikon has advantages in Dynamic Range with their image sensors, something a noob won't even give a crap about or even know the difference.
Canon has better lenses, which is far more important than the extremely minor differences in image sensor performance.
I know you drive a civic. That's why I used that as an example.

ok breh your leanin me back your way, i was kinda thinkin the Nikon D3200 and the Nikon 50mm AF-S f 1.4G lens...
the autofocus with manual override sounded pretty fuggin tight and easy to use for a n00b, am i gonna have a hard time focusing with the canon lens on something moving like my dogs?? the review i read on the nikon lens said every pic of moving objects stays in focus and it was way harder on a canon
The Canon 50mm 1.4 has autofocus with manual override.
Almost every Canon lens does, besides the entry level ef-s series lenses.
Besides, there is AI Servo mode in the camera that continuously updates the focus of moving objects.
For example, say a dog is 50 feet away, and is in the focused area of the shot, as it moves towards or away from you, it leaves the focused area. But, in AI servo mode, the focus will continuously adjust to keep the subject in focus.

At F4, that's not too bad. If it was 5.6, I'd definitely agree 100%.
Depends on whether he uses any flash or not. With flash, it's a non issue.
Either way, the quality is far and above any non dslr camera.

at f4 it still sucks, impossible w/o a tripod. and even then the shutter speed isn't fast enough to capture a sharp image.
He's just beginning, he's not going to have any OCF of any sort. Spend the extra money and go with IS. Adding in extra artificial light to an image when you're just learning makes it a bitch to learn what's actually happening in the camera.
Learn your camera then once you're comfortable with Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, etc then you can start playing with off camera flash.

If he's indoor and needs a fast lens, that 50 MM is an F1.4 which makes low light doable, razor sharp at 1.8.

I did the same, and ditched the extra kit lens for a legit one after like 2 weeks.
Sell your additional lens without using it (keep the 18-55 or whatever the f nikon is), so you can get top dollar for it and get a higher end lens of the same focal distance.
Lenses really do make the biggest difference. The Nikon 3200 is a really good beginner body.
