Has it helped you advance your career? If so how so?
 
almost got it when I worked at Amazon... but then I moved here, if you were in tech, manufacturing, QA or call center environments it can help you move up the chain.
 
Work for yourself so you dont have to suffer the indignity of acquiring something called "Six Sigma Black Belt" and it has nothing to do with being in a frat or martial arts.
 
I'm almost done with P90X which requires you to master kempo karate, just as good as a black belt in Kung Fu IMO. Took me two months.

I was out with a key supplier this evening. Talk about a long day... start at 5:00am and finished at 9:00pm.

But to answer your question. I did a green belt at GE but never pursued the black belt certification. If you're in a company that values that as part of a career advancement plan, I'd say do it.

If I personally see it on a resume, it's not a big deal to me.

So if this is truly optional for you, ask yourself a few questions:

1) Am I comfortable with basic statistical measures and tests of significance?

2) Am I capable of quantifying key aspects of a product/program/process and then working with the resulting numbers in a meaningful way?

3) Do I know the basic quality/process control tools such as Pareto charts, X-Bar and R-Charts and U/P Charts?

4) Do I know a little about experimental design, particularly factorial experiments and the tenets of sound testing regimens?

If so, I don't think you need the black belt certification.

If this is all new to you, I'd say do the black belt.

Didn't read the thread but six sigma just means you can document your proces, It's a huge marketing tool in manufacturing and just means you can document your supply chain....I need to invent twelve sigma as the next standard that everyone needs to pay me to achieve.

I have two processes I have to map out this quarter for my MBO's. It makes sense for global companies that have clerical functions in other parts of the world.

java nailed it...in the end it's just nice soothing words that put supply chain managers into a blissful trance. And golly jeepers if you got yourself a green or, gasp, even a black belt in it...why you just might get fellated by said supply chain manager in the backroom on your lunch break. Some touring corporate lecturer/consultant though made a killing off it. It's just a byword for quality control.

It's almost as good as googling it wikipedia to see what it is how it works. It's going to give a basic idea but not the scope of what it is. I wouldn't tend to give my opinion based on a google search.

Like I said a lot of clerical procedures are done in another part of the world process maps they get but if you try to explain it to them in simple English after 30 or minutes of talking you will want to kill yourself.

But he was right it's just soothing tones and marketing veneer. Everyone wants to come up with their own metrics and slap a patent on quality control measures. So i'm not arguing that "six sigma" is anything bad or stupid, it's just the ridiculous branding i'm laughing at. That belt system is just....i don't know.....it just makes me want to rub my temples and say the word "really" over and over again. I just pray to god that they don't actually hand out real belts or I am seriously pondering the end of rational civilization. I can just envision old samurain looking on with a wtf expression for what they would perceive as "doing your job".

I am a co owner of a small business dude. lols. And was so "before" i went back to school. How do you think i've been able to not work a 9 to 5 job the last 3 years? HOw do you think i've been able to pay for school and buy a condo? I've talked about being involved in a family business...can you not put two and two together? Creating a paper/quality control trail is important for fostering an atmosphere of responsibility; Everyone needs to be held accountable for the product...capitalism. You can add ISO as well to the list of industry standards...It's essential for any provider of products to be held accountable and an industry standard is always better than a government standard.
