If she can strongly affect your future?

I was thinking of a card and a plant?

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Is it expected in your line of work? I've left a few professional positions and neve given a gift to a boss

Get her a vaccum cleaner...chicks like vaccum cleaners. Like a really nice one with a HEPA filter on it, nom sayin?

Get her a well-used Nintendo DS and tell her you're gifting it because you won't need it anymore.

It won't hurt if you really think she could be helpful in the future. On the other hand, if an ex-employee gave me a gift, it would not have any effect on my opinion of her/him at all, on a professional level.

No... I just need to ask for a good reference letter from her for my next position

Clearly he fails to understand that ass-kissing your way to the top is almost a requirement in the corporate world, na mean?

I've never given a boss a gift whether I've left on good terms or bad.

You're entitled to asking for a letter of recommendation as long as you're leaving the job on good terms (i.e., you were laid off or you gave fair notice you're leaving your position vs. you were fired), that's sort of SOP.

Never underestimate the power of brown-nosing in the professional world. Some bosses eat it up even if it's blatant and obnoxious. And no boss is immune to a little sucking up.

Give her a token of appreciation but nothing too extravagent.

It's a tough call. As Smurf2 said, do it if it's customary in your line of work. I've never done that, but I've never had a bad boss. I've left jobs as I've grown out of them, but always on good terms, and still never gave gifts. In one case, I wrote a letter to the CEO saying all good things about the company (and the bosses), and it was all true. And I still didn't happen to think of any parting gift or card. Then again, it's been about 7 years since I left that job to go per-diem (tech position in a defense contractor lab), and I still have the time card and door access pass to the building. I never wound up doing any per-diem work after about 2005, and they still send me "zero earned" 1099s each year. Hmmm: Maybe I should mail that stuff back and collect my stuff from my locker. There are some Wheat Thins in that locker, which are probably rubbery enough by now, to make new motor mounts for my old Cadillac
