Represents the third eye.
Referred to as the "pottu".

Used to be that an unmarried girl wears a black one, married wears a red. These days it usually matches what they are wearing.

Men or women can wear them.

But in the end, it is essentially like what Y Lifter said - it is like wearing the cross, or the Star of David.
It signifies your paricular faith.

It is called a bindi. Originally used to show that a woman was married and therefore was provilieged. Now it is worn by unmarried girls too. It is also starting to appear as a general decorative item regardless of religion..........so it means nothing :)
