Do you brush your teeth every day? Do you wear deodorant on a regular basis? You’re probably saying, “Of course I do!” But even if you do brush your teeth and wear deodorant, you could still suffer from some extremely embarrassing personal hygiene problems. The worst part is that you may not even know it! And even if you’re unaware of a personal hygiene problem, it could be costing you dozens of future dates.
If you knew there was a disgusting personal hygiene problem keeping you from landing hot babes, would you do something to get rid of the problem? I’m willing to bet that the answer is a resounding yes. After all, who would choose wallowing in their own filth as opposed to going on a date with a Megan Fox look-a-like?
Unfortunately, embarrassing personal hygiene can creep up on you in many forms. You can do everything including brushing your teeth three times a day, flossing, taking two showers a day, and wearing deodorant, yet still be cursed with bad personal hygiene.
Obviously the world would be a better place if shielded from your personal hygiene problems. That being said, let’s take a look at the top 10 embarrassing personal hygiene problems as well as how to avoid them.
Personal Hygiene #1. Body Odor: Body odor is the king shit of all hygiene problems. Now I’m not trying to be mean, but if you have B.O., then you probably have very few friends. Sadly, some people with body odor don’t even realize how bad they smell. B.O. starts to take form when Apocrine glands release sweat while you’re under emotional stress or working out. Once the sweat is secreted, bacteria begins breaking it down on the surface of the skin thus causing the foul odor.
Preventing Body Odor: Body odor is easily prevented in most cases by showering with soap and water, and also using deodorant. If you’re unsure as to whether or not you stink, simply look at your showering and deodorant habits. Unfortunately, deodorant and showing and doesn’t always cut it so you may have to step it up a notch and use an antiperspirant at night.
Personal Hygiene #2. Jock Itch: Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is more embarrassing than sitting around the gym itching your crotch. It leaves you open to all sorts of behind-the-back jokes, and may have people wondering if you caught a nasty STD or two. You can tell jock itch by the unsightly rash around your groin area, which can spread to the thighs and other body parts.
Preventing Jock Itch: The best ways to prevent jock itch is to avoid working out in tight or abrasive underwear, shower after workouts, and keep your groin area clean and dry. If you do develop jock itch, you should buy some antifungal cream and start applying it to the infected area.
Personal Hygiene #3. Dandruff: Dandruff is right up there with missing your front four teeth on the attractiveness scale. In many cases, dandruff is caused by not shampooing your hair, which allows dirt, oils, and other nasty junk to fester in hair. However, there are other causes of dandruff including oily skin, psoriasis, and sensitivity to hair care products. But whatever the cause is, it’s important to your sex life to take care of dandruff.
Preventing Dandruff: The obvious cure for dandruff is to shampoo your hair daily, but this isn’t always the case with some people. Another thing you should do is limit the amount of hair care products you use and/or purchase a dandruff-specific shampoo. A dandruff preventive measure for people with psoriasis is to oil their scalp (make sure it is a specialized oil). Also, simple things like properly managing your stress levels, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sun can go a long way to preventing a snowfall every time the wind blows through your hair.
Personal Hygiene #4. Bad Breath: This is an obvious one, and a personal hygiene problem that affects the most people. You can undo all of your brushing efforts in one day just by eating a hamburger topped with onions. After all, foods like onion and garlic must pass through the system before your bad breath will be permanently gone. What’s worse is that even without the onion-laced hamburger, you could suffer form the dreaded halitosis. Gum disease, plaque build-up, missing certain areas while brushing, and smoking can all cause bad breath.
Preventing Bad Breath: The easiest solution is to make sure you brush your teeth at regular intervals and floss daily. Make sure that there is no plaque left on your teeth as well. Another thing is to realize that brushing and/or chewing gum is only a temporary solution after you’ve eaten foods like onions and garlic; you’re better off avoiding these foods altogether before a big date. Also, if bad breath persists, consult a doctor because you could have gum disease or even a bigger disease that’s at the root of the problem.
Personal Hygiene #5. Greasy Hair: Nobody respects a guy who looks like he washes his hair in chicken grease. Better yet, it won’t look like you wash your hair at all if you have greasy hair. And you can only use the excuse that you ran out of shampoo and washed your hair with conditioner so many times before the jokes start in. Greasy hair is caused by an accumulation of sebum (oils), which is meant to keep your hair soft.
Preventing Greasy Hair: If your hair is extremely greasy, then you should visit a styling salon, and get some advice on how to take care of the problem. Of course, this is extremely embarrassing so you might want to avoid ruining your chances with some hot stylist and prevent the greasy hair on your own. Some things you should do include shampooing your hair daily, avoiding excessive combing or touching of the hair, using conditioner sparingly, and avoiding gels or pomades that attract oil to the scalp.
Personal Hygiene #6. Athlete’s Foot: Now this may not be as embarrassing as jock itch, but athlete’s foot can quickly turn into an embarrassing problem. Just ask the kid I knew in high school named Tony who somehow managed to spread athlete’s foot to both his face and groin. He basically turned into a crotch-itching, pizza face. Even if you’re fortunate enough to avoid having your athlete’s foot spread, it still sucks itching your feet every 5 seconds. Athlete’s foot is caused when you come in contact with fungus, and provide this fungus with the perfect conditions to grow – i.e. damp, dark places.
Preventing Athlete’s Foot: Some preventative measures for avoiding athlete’s foot include the following: limit the amount of time you wear shoes, change socks after workouts, dry in between your toes after going swimming, and avoid wearing wet shoes. If you’re past the preventative measures and have mild athlete’s foot, you should try some antifungal powder or talcum. Besides these products, there are all kinds of lotions, creams, and gels designed to help rid you of athlete’s foot.
Personal Hygiene #7. Acne: I’ll spare you anymore pizza face jokes since I already got that out of the way when discussing athlete’s foot. Besides, most of us already know how bad having acne can be from our teenage days. Unfortunately, some of us still suffer from acne past the high school days – especially those who juice. Contrary to what many people think, acne isn’t caused by eating chocolate, having dirt on your face, or being stressed out. Rather acne is caused when bacteria and sebum (lubricates and protects the skin) combine while attracting white blood cells that block pores.
Preventing Acne: Billions of dollars have been made on the clogged pores of people everywhere. And pharmacy shelves reflect this as they are stocked full of acne medications. With so many different treatments available, it’s really tough to know what to pick beyond the old adage of washing your face with soap and water. The best thing to do is look at online reviews, and find a product that is recommended by several websites.
Personal Hygiene #8. Foot Odor: If friends strongly urge you to keep your shoes or keep misplacing their foot powder on your dresser, it may be a sign that you suffer from foot odor. Foot odor is just as bad as body odor; the only saving grace is that you have your shoes to conceal the smell. But you can only conceal this smell for so long because the feet contain the highest concentration of sweat glands on the body at half a million glands. Just like body odor, foot odor is caused by bacteria breaking down sweat.
Preventing Foot Odor: One of the biggest things you can do to prevent foot odor is wearing clean socks and changing them after workouts. If your shoes get wet, let them dry before wearing the same shoes again. Also, avoid wearing your shoes without socks because sweat from your feet will go directly into your shoes. Besides paying attention to socks and shoes, keep your feet clean and dry by washing them frequently and toweling off. If this doesn’t work, also consider using an antiperspirant and using foot odor powder in your shoes.
Personal Hygiene #9. Dirty Fingernails: This is one of the more subtle personal hygiene problems people have because dirty fingernails don’t smell or cause people to coil in horror when near you. Instead dirty fingernails are seen, which means it should be that much easier for you to spot the problem. And trust me: you need to take care of this problem because women do notice the dirt under your nails!
Preventing Dirty Fingernails: You can’t really stop dirty fingernails from happening (aside from not working dirty jobs), but you can definitely do some things to rid yourself of the dirt. Whenever dirt is under your nails, scrape it out with a sharp object (be careful though). A semi-preventative measure is to rub the dead skin out from underneath the nails so it doesn’t catch extra dirt; use a toothbrush to do this. Also, clip your nails frequently because longer nails collect more dirt.
Personal Hygiene #10. Sweaty Palms: Sweaty palms is one of the less noticeable personal hygiene problems people suffer from. But this doesn’t mean you should ignore clammy hands because no girl wants a palm full of sweat every time she holds hands with you. Unfortunately, to this day doctors do not know the exact cause of sweaty palms, though it is believed to be genetic. Other probable causes are obesity, psychiatric disorders, and diseases like hyperthyroidism.
Preventing Sweaty Palms: For some people, sweaty palms is only a mild problem while others can drip up to 4 liters of sweat a day from their hands. The 4-liter people might have to resort to more drastic measures when taking care of their problem such as sweat gland surgery. But in most cases, you’ll be able to get by with simply ingesting sage (cuts your body’s perspiration in half), clapping with medicated powders or cornstarch, and drying your hands with a towel every so often.
