Would you still workout if weights didn't build muscle

Ok, imagine this scenario. Suppose that our bodies would not be the incredible adaptive organishm, physically speaking. If a person would lift weights, their bodies would not change asthetically, and other peole would never tell that a person works out, even if that person has been through numerious steroid cycles and many years of weightraining.

Would you still lift if the only advantage of weightlifting was
strength, and not mass.

Obviously this question is biased toward powerlifters, but it will separate those who consider lifting their lifestyle, and those who consider it to be a hobby.

So let's see who the people here really are.
 
I don't think so. For me the fun is derived from setting realistic body goals and achieving them. If I could not achieve, I wouldn't do it.

A permanent strength plateau doesn't sound very rewarding, only frustrating. Although I'm addicited to the motions too. Still leaning towards a "no" though.
 
I would now, but I wouldn't have gotten to this stage in the first place most likely, I'd probably have given up after a few months.

So, if it happened now and you could gain no muscle, I'd still work out, but if it had happened back when i started training i'd have given up.

Since I have physical appearance goals AND strength goals the answer would be yes. I would just concentrate on strength gains.
 
This is sort of a catch 22 for me. Honestly, I would train just for strength as I've powerlifted for many years. However, if it weren't for my quest for a better looking body I would have never even started lifting. My original goals were just to look better for the first year and then I switched to powerlifting
 
sure........ i would just be a strongman/powerlifter......... instead of a strongman/powerlifter/bodybuilder.

If strength is all that is gained, folks would still have something to show off. a few folks will always find ways to be ostentatious with their skills, so, yes, i would still go for it because for one, im healthier than ever, and i know that if all i gained was strength, plenty of folks would have found ways to show it off ...and so would I...

and even at small muscularities, you ever seen some sprinters and triathletes? their muscular physiques are rather impressive ...
 
yes, need the strength gains, those are more important to me. Also nice avatar revexrevex. they lok like some pretty ladies =))
 
Hell yes

Could you imagine weighing 150 lbs, yet having the strength of a world class heavyweight powerlifter?? You could do AMAZING things.

That would be fucking great:)

Unless i wanted to compete in a powerlfting contest or it assisted me in some other sport, i can't see that strength for the sake of strength would keep me interested.

Apparently there are people who train that can't build muscle.

Its called poor nutrition and wrong exercise selection.

To answer the question, i would still train. . .I need a strong body to enhance athletic performance.
 
I think it would be neat to see a 140 lb guy squatting 1000 lbs.
 
OF COURSE

the fun is going to the gym and lifting...the big\strongness or whatever you do is like a bonus
 
Putting more iron on the bar is certainly the challenge now, plus i started to gain strength for sport, so "yes" :)

power was always my primary reason for lifting. It would be really cool to have my current strength at 14lbs...

Yes, because I lift for strength, health and fitness, not really for size or looks, although those are a nice bonus.
 
SK.....I would too. Just being in the gym and lifting the weights get me off. It's a church...very special. I don't bring problems of money, family or anything there. It's MY time and it's purely selfish and I like it that way.

The smell of chalk, the sound of the weights clanging, the rush of getting another rep when you just knew that you couldn't....THAT is what gets me off. Muscle is a by-product of all the other stuff done right.
 
If I couldn't build muscle or strength, I would still do some sort of heavy labor. I'd be a farmer, or an oil rig roughneck, or a lumberjack or something. I just love working hard and getting dirty.
 
The first time I picked up a weight, it was to enhance that appearance, and this hasn't cahnged. I very much enjoy ligitng and while it would be interesting to look like everyone else with my current strength level, it wouldn't motivate me to train like I do, so the answer would have to be no. I'm a bodybuilder, through and through. Strength is nothing more than a means to an end, just as weight lifting. Ultimately, the only reason I train is to continually improve my body. The quest for the physcial perfection, which I will never attain.
 
I think I'm motivated by strength gains rather than size gains but if it didn't build muscle then how the hell would we recognise each other?
 
No doubt about it, YES. I can come up with too many reasons that having a surplus of strength would be useful for.

As for powerlifting, if you eat enough you can get huge doing it too.

i was lucky to be one of those teenagers that got into it to be stronger, perform better, and not to have bigger guns. getting a better physique is just a plus side of it all :)

so definately i will still workout. plus, it's a great stress reliever, which many of us, especially the students these days seem to need.
 
def yes. The main reason i started was for strength for football. The gym is too big of a part of my life to not lift.
 
I don't give two shits about what the mirror says....all I want to do is be as functionally strong as possible.
 
This question has become interpreted as a choice between muscle and strength. How about if it just didn't build? You still got the pumps, the focus, the endorphins and all the health benefits but no growth and no strength gain. Then would any of us still work out?
 
I would still workout because then the motherfuckers that normally don't talk shit to me would, but they would not realize how strong I am and I could kick their ass. I would just a powerlifter. :bigbuck:
 
Not as much as I do; I would do a lot more bike riding.
 
I wouldnt touch a weight if my life depended on it, I graduated high school 5 years ago at 135 5'11''...if I couldnt add mass/size, whats the point,I would be the skinny guy still....might as well not burn any calories for nothing. Im addicted to the gym as of last 4 months or so, I feel nekkid if I dont go everyday,but I have to take 2 days off.
 
hell yea i'd lift just wouldn't spend money on supplements and ...... what are those things called again!!!!!!!!
 
Yep, weightlifting is a bit of a powertrip for me. Being able to push iron around gives me a smile. :)
