Why is it that......?? (kinda off topic)

Why is it that the general public always insist on getting into pissing contests with me??

I went to a family party last night (my extended family has 60+ members) and there were one or two people I hadn't seen before (new bf's and gf's). So I'm doing the rounds and saying hello, when this obese soab insists on telling me right out of the blue that he went to a gym once and benched 280kg without training......oh and he later thought he could intimidate me by making a big deal out of telling me that he is a manic depressive (I laughed in his face because of that!!). Then he insists on telling me that his 'friend' can bench 2 or 3 times as much with ease. I should mention that this guy had no pecs, shoulders ot tri's to speak of and he weighed in at about 350lb (mostly on his gut and ass). Well I laughed that one off......figured he musta got his pounds mixed up with his kilo's......and have a serious inferiority complex.

Then I get this 16 year old prick trying to crush my hand......

Anybody else get this??

Sure. It is why I never socialize with my in-laws.

People would always rather try to diminish your efforts and success instead of putting the energy they waste doing this into improving themselves. Of course, this is why they are still fat, weak, and stupid, but this never seems to occur to them.

People always know someone bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, etc. and somehow manage to associated themselves with this person in their own mind, and somehow delude themselves into thinking they shine by reflected glory. This is not the case.

I have gotten the "How much can you bench?" question at least a twenty times ths year from people I just met at bars, clubs, relatives etc.. If the person is interested in training then I will discuss it and give them tips and refer them to the elitefts site. If they are condescending and trying to fck with me a little like your fat fiend then I will say that I hardly train or that I dont train so they wont bother me.

Usually someone will say something like "I used to bench 300 but I hut my shoulder" or some lie like that. If the person is interested in improving then I will help but if they try to get into pissing contests then I will shut them down.

Ya i get the how much do you bench question too. I just tell them and they shut up!

When people start with there lifts un officially i give them the chance to prove it with me. Dude iam a straight shooter, if you give me bull shit (familiy friends or not) i will call you out. Cause lord knows i have been questioned by people who dont believe me. So i show them a pic or magazine and my validity is done. Now prove yours!

And if some Fat boy says he benches 700 lbs in his home gym tell him straight up "your a fuckin lyer". I would. If not prove it. Plan and simple. Until he proves it then drop the discussion. Tell him he is making a fool of himself! Let him knwo he would be one of the best in the world and with no training he should train and be Number 1! Then say get fuckin real!

Thanks lol!

There must be many people on this board who get the "How much can you bench?" line from people a lot.

One time when I got asked I was sick of it so I told the dude over 6400 ounces (over 400) and he was baffled! He couldnt understand what the hell I was talking about then I told him that I have no idea the weight-I never count the weight in pounds, just ounces! You should have seen the confusion on his face!

One fat guy who looked big but was almost all fat 300 lbs of it was talking shit about his 300 pound bench at a party and it turns out that the fool brings the bar halfway down (a partial) and claims it as a real bench press.

Be wary of non powerlifting people doing half reps or bouncing the bar and calling it a bench press because a lot of time upon further interrogation of their lifts I figure out thats what often happens.

i get this horseshit allthe time. i have a few powerlifting shirts that i wear every now and again. my westside shirt is prolly the key one, but i think people feel imtimidated to know that someone might out lift them. it's not a big deal to me if someone else can out bench or squat me. hell, that's just part of being human. as soon as someone says "how much do you bench" you can immediately tell it's a loaded question and if you bench under 300 then they just keep on talking, but if you say over 300lbs then either 1)they have a friend that does what you do or more or 2) you must be on the roids or "creatine" because that's the only way people bench that much.

i have a pathetic relative who is always telling me about this magical exercise that he does back when "he was big". his idea of big is 10lbs more than what i weigh. and he is always being a prick and saying "you're not big enough to take me yet". these dumbasses make you want to punch their lights out. i hate going to xmas dinners and having someone say "ohh hey do you pump the iron". BLEH!(@*&$ i could go on forever giving examples but it's enough to say that it irritates the shit out of me. i never belittle people about what they do or what they spend money on. i get so much shit about the price i paid for the westside seminar tapes. ARGH ARGH@!#(*$

How come none of these idiots ever ask about the deadlift.

My personal favorite reply works very well on people who have no clue about OL'ing.

'not very much but I will gladly show you my snatch.'

Said quite loudy in a room full of slightly tipsy professors, this line will get no end of stares.

hey arioch, how much do you deadlift? (there, someone finally asked you)

lol! at the snatch comment. Has anyone every said "sure, i'd love to see your snatch"

I guess this happens to all of us. The best one I heard in a while was at a party recently where an old guy told me that he once benched 800lb for 4 reps and then the bar broke in half when he attempted his fifth rep! I dunno why but I seldom call out people when they make such idiotic claims to my face. I think its because I'm confident enough in my own ability that I just tell them that's great and shut up.

A couple of months ago we were warming up for squats when a guys came up to us. He was about 250lb, solid with big legs and delts. He asked me what is that thing called where you pick the bar up off the floor. I told him that it was the deadlift. He asked me if I could help him some on his technique because he had his first weightlifting competition (didn't even know what sport he was competing in) a week before and that he had another comp coming up the next week. I said sure, I'll help him after our squat workout.

Out of curiosity I asked him how much he deadlifted the previous week. He said 450kg (990lb) and I asked him if it wasn't pounds he was referring to. He said no, it was definitely kilos. I then told him that unfortunately I couldn't help him on his deadlift seeing that he just demolished the all-time world record and that I was completely out of his league. I tried to keep a straight face but one of my partners couldn't control himself so we all burst out laughing. We never saw him again.
