why does soccer always attract hooligans?

It's more because it's much more important to them. Soccer to other people is what Football, Basketball and Baseball is to the US combined. The World Cup only happens every 4 years too. So much more is riding on it. It's a low scoring sport so any mistake can cause mayhem.

You don't hear of that shit in football or baseball.
My guess:

1) Broad fan base, including what would be our WWE and NASCAR base which can be (but isn't always) a fairly rough crowd

2) A liberal opinion toward alcohol and it's distribution at the events

3) Long-standning country rivalries including situations where one country fought/controlled/ransacked the other -- and sometimes fairly recently.

It goes back to the origins of the game. Kicking the severed head of your enemy around the town is one of life's guilty pleasures. Consequently, it's traditional to turn the blind eye when things get rowdy.

Some of us have been watching the World Cup hoping the hooligans would break loose eventually. I'm waiting for a fight in the stadium, but I hope they don't bring the damn thing down like they did years ago.

3rd world nations with nothing to lose, Europeans (think about it).......nothing going on but soccer or lousy TV shows.....I feel for um.

I don't attend any sporting events. People act like fools and I'm way above that kind of behavior and don't want to be anywhere near it.

wtf? if this is true soccer rules, my new favorite sport.

soccer is almost designed to maximise tension/frustration. half time entertainment? nope. occasional 'feel good' events like your team actually scoring something? nope. mascots? nope. cheerleaders? nope. even the players are semi-professional dramatic actors - they brush another player and they magically do 4 twists and a somersault in the air before they even hit the ground, then roll around with a grimace so bad that youd think someone lit their balls on fire

all thats gotta go somewhere...

oh. and, uh...the english. the scottish. wtf do you expect? logic? reason? lol!

hooligans?

1927 called. they want their word back.

Mascots, cheeleaders, 6 points from one goal..... gotta give something to have the people sit fucking 4 hours in NFL game, a field size chess game.

cheerleaders....mascots....help take ur attention away from the shitty game on the field. soccer is all about the game and the game only. 45 mins at a time. Yes, there is a lil bit of fake...diving...but oh well.

but it aint like...basketball or football....where the coach calls a timeout every 2 plays to "re-think our PLAN" what plan???? just get out there and play.

hooligans are gonna be there. think about it. its the BIGGEST tournament in the world.

in my opinion, soccer is man abilities at their best. physical and mental.

you only find a game boring when you don't understand it

or never played it

nope, sorry disagree.
I played from ele all the way through my 12th grade yr in school.
and soccer is boring to watch.
and it's pretty simple to understand

it's the great balance between 22 skilled individuals and 2 skilled teams that makes it so watchable
far better than basketball. American football is beyond boring.

More legend than fact. If you have any links to information on that one, be interested in reading them.

Hooliganism is associated to football simply by the fact that hooligans have chosen football to be their medium, the stage on which they can act out their idiocy. They use the tension and rivalry of the game to incite violence and conflict. True football fans want nothing to do with this type of person or conduct.

Can understand a lot of Americans finding football boring, it must be difficult to concentrate for 45 minutes at a time without a break in the play for a hotdog and some bimbo dancing. Americans seem to prefer their marathon beer guzzling burger munching social sporting events where nobody really has any idea what's going on. Saying that, been pleasantly surprised by the amount of American interest in the game during this World Cup.

No , your correct. It's an old, popular legend that is often told. I was being a bit facetious.

On the other hand, there's no hard evidence disproving the notion. Given what life was like in Middle Age Europe, it's my misguided opinion that such incidents may have sporadically occurred. Where theres smoke, there's fire.
