Why does my f-in arm go numb when I sleep?

It is most likely due to thoracic outlet syndrome, an impingement of the brachial plexus that results in numbness and pain in the shoulder that usually radiates down the arm.
Usually caused by muscle imbalances & flexibility loss in the shoulder or shoulder girdle. You need a qualified assessment and soft tissue work, stretching and corrective exercise and program design to eliminate the imbalances I.E reduction of pressing movemts and lots of retraction and external rotation

The readon why your arms are falling asleep so easily is because of your mass. The more mass you have the easier it is to have the blood circulation cutt off. I have been living with it for a couple of years. Luckily the old man is a doc, so he went into great detail. The only thing you can do to get rid of it is to stay flexible. I don't know about you but that is really hard for me to do so I just learned to make myself sleep on my back with my arms by my side.
ok....common problems listed only. you do need to see a doc as its unlikely to be anything more but i aint no doc so an examination of you is needed
which fingers do you feel the numbness in?
little finger and either the half of the ring finger or all of it?
- This is ulnar nerve compression or 'saturday night arm'....ulnar nerve is being squashed
Thumb and the first and middle fingers going numb
- median nerve compression, which can be due to 'carpal tunnel syndrome', where inflammation in the 'insulation cord' round the ligaments in your wrist squish the nerve. can leave patients flicking their hand to wake it up.
do see your doc....this is only the intenet and i can;t examine you. it can be thoracic outlet syndrome, especially if in both hands/arms, so a doc does ned to do a full neuro exam on you...and if carpal tunnel there is some weak association with diabetes etc so its good to get that ruled out (rare)
but it does need an examination....seriously
after that they can tell you what to do....so no worries and no numb arm

If you havent seen a doc you probably should, a family practicioner/GP 'should' do, asically someone who can do a neuro exam, and go from there, but im sure its gonna be fairly simple for them to diagnose

thing about nerve compression is the longer you leave it compressed, the worse it can get, and it sounds like even though its minor at the moment, but this is the best time to get it examined and checked out, so whatever the reason for the compression it can be resolved
for all i know it will resolve on its own, i got smakcked HARD on the elbow a few times in stickfighting and it has taken like a month for the nerve pain sensation to subside, but i was able to diagnose myself, you should really go see a doc, im sure its free for yanks to see one.
p.s. im not a doc, even more reason to see one

No loss of power. I haven't seen a doctor because I just figured I was cutting off circulation. (I tend to sleep coffin style, with my hands folded over my chest.
) It happens only when I leave my arms folded up like that for a while, watching TV or in bed. As soon as I stretch them out again, it goes away.So - am I supposed to be worried?

The longer it goes untreated, the worse the problem can be because muscles can begin to atrophy. Women are more inclined to thoracic outlet syndrome due to an increased 1st. rib angle which promotes shoulder internal rotation and forward head posture. There is resulting hypertonicity primarily in the the scalenes where the nerve bundle exits.
If you push on the scalenes & you get pain its one of the indicators of T.O.S and you need to be properly evaluted not only neurologically but physically to determine postural abnormalities and altered length tension relationships in your shoulder girdle.
This is one of the most common problems I treat in women and it is usually due to bad posture at work / home , wearing heels and training predominately on machines and like the meathead bodybuilders who overdevelop the anterior muscles (pecs, delts, bi's, rectus abdominus) with minimal attention to posture, flexibilty and balanced muscle tension. If you are unwilling to change your posture, stop wearing heels or modify your exercise routine then you will never get rid of the pain.
Put up your routine & what your occupation is and we can probably identify some of the problems BUT you still need to see a doctor and or a COMPETENT therapist or corrective exercise specialist

Up until a year & 1/2 ago, I owned a retail store and wore heels a lot. I sold the store and haven't worn heels much since.
I work part time for my boyfriend now - he owns an excavation company. This means that I do a lot of manual labor, and am an expert shoveler or asphalt, concrete, dirt, etc. I maybe work 10 days out of the month.
My foot gear now consists of Uggs, work boots, workout shoes (new balance). I put on a pair of heels a few weeks ago to go out somewhere. First time in months. I lifted my son up (he's 5) and threw my lower back out. It took about 2 weeks, with an adjustment a day, to get it back to normal. It's still a bit twingy.
I really got serious about lifting about the same time I sold my business. I lift 5-6 days a week, one body part per day. I do HIIT cardio same days.

My arms go nunb when I sleep , the reason is when your asleep your blood pressure drops and if you fall asleep with your arm elevated for example with one arm up on the pillow the blood flows out and your arm gose numb , if you wake up to find your arm numb just open and close your hand a few times to help the blood flow and it will return to normal in a few seconds

supreme's answer pretty much covered it all, sorry, im working for a few weeks in a place where i dont have regular internet access....
but pinky and ring finger is nerve distribution (ulnar nerve) and therefore the nerve is being affected according to your history
I wouldnt be worried but i would see a doc just so he can do an exam

All the responses above are really good... don't forget nerve glides. Sometimes it is your nerves not your blood. I think the last time I posted I wrote on nerve glides too... ha. Also, you might try massaging, and icing the shoulder and surrounding area for a little bit to get swelling to go down (if it exists).
Another thing if none of this helps, would you happen to be getting big shocks down your neck and into your arm with certain head and shoulder movements?

Could be several issues in play. Thoracic outlet sysndrome is possible, as is poor sleeping positioning. These would be my first guesses.
Incorporate more stretching into your routine, this can help loosen stiffness which can lead to/exacerbate the problem. Prolonged hangs [2 arm + 1 arm] from a bar can help w/ shoulder girdle stiffness.
You should get eval'd by your doc. This could be postulated on all day on the WWW, a thorough hands-on exam is what you need here.

Happens to me when i am on cycle, not sure why obviously something with blood flow. The best position i found was on my back with arms on stomach or fingers interlocked on chest.
