Why do most women wear white on their wedding day?

This is the actual reason why women wear white for their weddings:

When Queen Victoria got married she was rich (obviously) and she wore white for her wedding as a fashion statement. Ladies of her time and most of the general public couldn't afford white. It just wasn't practical - white got dirty too easily. It was the tradition at that time that new brides wear their "wedding gown" often during the first year of their marriage. This made the use of white fabric very very difficult when their were no washing machines or dry cleaners. Then, after her wedding it was the fashion to wear white and other women started doing it - and soon it was tradition.

I don't doubt that your g/f's explanation in light of her experience in the profession of wedding gown design is incorrect; however, I think it's not entirely accurate. That may very well be the reason it was started, but it sure isn't the reason women do it today.

Why do I think that? Take a poll and ask women why they think other women wear white to their weddings. Shit, look at this thread - 29 replies and you were the first one to mention this.

The commonly accepted reason for this tradition today seems to be purity. Women wear white to their weddings because they are (supposedly) virgins. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case anymore, so women these days seem to wear it because "well, everyone else is doing it."

Kind of takes away from the dignity of the ceremony I think. Women shouldn't try to represent sexual purity if they're not sexually pure.

Why can't people accept that it is just tradition. 90% of those girls who wear a white wedding gown are not doing so in the misguided belief that they are signifying to the world that they are pure or virgins. They do so for tradition. nothing more nothing less.

Why do we stand for the playing of the national anthem, why does the president live in the white house, why why why, because of tradition.

Why do we have to dismantle every fucking tradition because it's not trendy or hip or happening
