Why are silencers illegal?

They are right? A good silencer for pistols, I dont think they are legal. What is the big deal?

I wish I could get a couple, just for the hell of it. If it is not illegal, where can you buy them?

They're illegal. I would guess that is has something to do with them serving no valid purpose other than to do illegal shit with them.

They are illegal and it's hard to make one that'll stand the heat of more then a few rounds without the proper tools.

They're actually legal if you buy one as a Class III item. In some countries like Finland, having a silencer on your pistol at the range is mandatory. Same for hunting. Many hunting zones won't let you hunt without a can on your rifle.

And yes, some quality silencers can stand many rounds without being too hot. Relfex brand from Br Tuotte is one example.

Manny's right, they're not illegal, but they are very tightly regulated. They are considered Class III items just like a full auto firearm. You have to ask permission of your government to buy one, and pay the tax on it every year. In my home state of NJ, you just aren't going to get one because nobody will sign off on the paperwork for you to buy one.

A few buddies have used them, and they say it's amazing how efficient they can be.

I know that they are class 3. I ment illegal like roids are illegal. You can, with the paperwork and yata yata....
Anyways, I need to learn how to make one or several.
I've shot silenced weapons in Vegas, but never outdoors.

I wish I had a couple just for the gun range. I got muffs, but I really wish I had a nice silencer. So I have to obtain a permit from the Government (which aint gonna happen) or have a gun guy get me one, which is also not gonna happen.

What is the big deal? Is it because you might "murder" quietly? I dont understand why some liberal regulations keep up with silencers and shit.

Onerep, one good purpose is the gun range. Another good purpose is if you ever shot a 10mm and realized you just woke up everyone in the county. I just dont understand why this item would be classIII.

So is there any place to buy a silencer legally in the US without submitting a request to the ATF? If not ATF, what agency do you send an application to for a silencer?

Yeah, they are actually not Class III where I am, but they are considered Item II which falls under the same restrictions as a Class III weapon. But because the silencer is technically not a weapon, it is Item II. Anyways, here all I would have to do is pay a $200 title transfer fee, and have a Class III/Item II dealer have one shipped in to them. Once my title transfer clears, I can go pick it up from the dealer. To get the transfer you have to get the local sheriff's permission, and they can't refuse you here unless you are a felon, and the fingerprint you and get all your other info on file. So it's really kind of amusing. I have to go through all of that for the silencer, but to get the handgun I only had to wait 48 hours and they shred all the paperwork once the gun is picked up. So there is no record of me owning the handgun. Now how does that make sense. I wish I knew of a place I could get one without having to go through all the hassle..............
