My last couple leg days i gave this a shot after reading about it. Ive always noticed while squatting with sneakers on that i couldnt really focus on driving my heals through the floor maybe cuz how they are shaped or watever, and was more prone to lean forwrd which didnt feel comfortable...After doing it barefoot, i realized its a lot more cofortable, and that it hit my legs and glutes a lot better....

Just curious if anyone does this or has ever tried it..I know im sold....post up!!! Want to hear feedback...

i do it all the time. it works so much better for me. i await the flaming in this thread lol.

I actually prefer barefooted to my Chuck Taylors. When I'm squatting heavy, which is above 220, I just feel more anchored and stable going barefooted.

But I also train alone in my home gym so there's no knuckleheads to drop plates on my toes.

Same here and im always more cautious and paranoid when i handle plates barefoot and always on point..All it takes is a 5lb weight slippin out of my hands and.....Ill stop there....lol...

iv not done barefoot in ages, i keep my shoes on cause its easier and the gym floor is dirty.

if i trained at home i would train barefoot the whole time...

I don't train barefooted, but I do wear classic Vans. Never was a fan of the Converse. Maybe when I get my home gym built, I'll train barefooted.

I'd use the search function.

It has been highly debated about 100 times over the years on this forum.

And nobody squats big without shoes.

i think the bottom line is simple. if you have been training for a while and know how to keep safe onder the bar, can progress in your lifts and try barefoot and feal better with it that with shoes than the answer for you as to squat barefoot. if you try it and it does not feal right than dont do it. chucks are my #2 choice.

to the deads question i wear my shoes doing deads and all other lifts except squats. i havent worn shoes doing squats for probably over a year now. i dont know what i max but i can get 405 ass to the floor for 6 not that high but im not a pl'er either.

I only squat barefoot when i forget to bring my flat shoes to the gym but i have flat feet so doesnt really matter if i wear shoes or not, lol.

Must say barefoot squating seems better for me, only done it at home thought, wouldn't dare take my shoes of in my gym lol

LOL...Clint, everything has been highly debated over the years. We'd never have any new threads if everyone followed your advice. :)

Yeah, but this one erks me to the 10th degree...lol

Heck...I guess it all does...lol

(I am smiling though)

At a point I had to really start learning from guys who did more than me in life and I had to stick to what they did for a time, picking, choosing, and learning what was and wasn't working for me. I've never met anyone who was a good successful squatter who was barefoot.

Lots of guys are big pullers barefoot though!

Well now that you went there, I squat in my undees. One of those weird lifter things we all have. I got the idea years ago that anything on my thighs, even like shorts, distracted me when squatting.

Absolutely useless without pictures.

If you don't have any, I have a nice camera and an open schedule....

Hi 5! :D i squat barefooted in undies but thats the advantage of having a home gym. Never really thought about it but its just how i train

Deadlift in socks/ oly shoes for squats. with wide stance squats, you get better ankle support & stability. your also putting alot of weight on one barefoot when your un-racking the weight & stepping back (unless your using the Smith machine).

as you go up in weight- i think your prone to more injuries (or PLrs wouldnt wear shoes).

Ok all you doubters regarding big weight and no shoes. In '03 I hit 315 for 1 to parallel with no shoes. (just over 2x my bw)

I mean Chucks do diddily for arch support, right? So no diff there going barefoot. I think if your foot is wide enough you can get the lateral support you need without the Chucks until you get to jumbo weights which I define as 3x bw or more.

I'm sorry...but 315 isn't "big weight" unless you are well WELL under 100 lbs, playing pop league ball, or are a small woman. At age 16 I full OLY squatted 405 x 8 in a pair of Wal-Mart knee wraps and a Wal-Mart "belt". I wasn't barefoot nor was I wearing a pair of Nike Shox.

Before you want to down the "doubters"...maybe you should take half a second and realize what some of us "doubters" have accomplished.

WHY would you want Squat shoes with big arch support? You think that the ONLY reason one would wear "squat shoes" is "arch support"? It is clear that you do not have a clue of the concept as to why Chucks are a superior squat shoe for most. Depending on stance and preference...and OLY shoe could be 1st (I have and use both).

Wow Clint my post was mostly tongue and cheek and certainly my use of the word "doubter" was.

I do know exactly why Chucks are prefered in heavy squatting. I prefaced by pointing out do do not provide arch support so there is no advantage over barefooted in that respect. They provide torsional stability with wide, squared off, stiff sidewalls and are a big help in Oly stance as you press outward with your feet.

I understand that in the PL/strongman world a 155lb 20yo woman properly squatting 315lbs completely raw, conventional stance isn't heavy, but I do feel that the other 99.9% of the world find that to be very serious weight. I don't think we can compare PL/strongman trainig to bodybuilding training.

For just about any sized woman, squatting 315 is one hell of an accomplishment! The record (for women) is around 600 lbs.

And if any of these guys know a chick who is capable of properly squatting 315 raw I'd truly like to see the proof. I know I sure as shit can't.

There basically is no "raw" in powerlifting anymore. Even "raw" means belt and wraps.

The record for a woman is upwards of an 800lb squat set a few years ago. Pretty sure she can squat 315 nekkid. Posted a video last week of a 165lb woman squatting mid 7's...pretty sure she could nail 315 nekkid.

And they both wear special squat shoes.

My most sincere apologies if I have offended you or if I have taken your post out of contest.

When I squat (you can see my stance, I've even brought it in a bit lately) I really press outwards on those side walls and they provide so much benefit. The Chucks have "some sole" and that seems to even out the little curves and arches in my foot for better stability that I wouldn't get barefoot.

I think that all sports based on the gym and the kitchen can be compared. In fact, I believe that most bodybuilders could be just as successful (or unsuccessful) as I have been in Strongman BUT that I would probably never be successful in bodybuilding because of my bone structure and genetics. I haven't accomplished anything amazing or that anyone else on this board couldn't do with time. And all 3 sports are based on diet and progressive resistance training. Progressive...

I think RW and I are both talking about beltless, no special suit, no special shoes.

This is all I can find in terms of records, I don't know how accurate, comprehensive or up to date the sites are:

I'm currently taking a look to see how big Becca Swanson is, just out of curiousity, she's the chick who put up 800+ ... okay, according to Wikipedia, these are her stats:

* Height: 5 ft 9 in (175 cm)
* Weight: 240 lb (110 kg)
* Calves: 17.5 in (440 mm)
* Quads: 27 in (690 mm)
* Shoulders: 54 in (1,400 mm)
* Biceps: 17.5 in (440 mm)

fuck those are some big bi's for a womans body... :shocked:
She's thick as hell. You see 5'9" for a chick and you think ectomorph (well, I do, because I'm 5'9" and I've got long limbs). To see her pictured though you'd think she's short, because she's so thick.

Basically she can outbench what, about 3/4's of the dudes on these boards? No fair comparing her squat to a mere mortal's :lmao:

Why don't you grow up? The least you could do is have some respect for her accomplishments, instead of demeaning it by hinging your opinion of her on something so superficial as appearance.

Becca Swanson or Shannon Hartnett.
