While on, how much protein do you eat?

MrRTTB

New member
I eat about 300grams from meat and fish, proteinpowder and fish. Rest up to about 100 more(total about 400) comes from the protein in bread, rice, pasta and so on. How much do you eat?

I try to get 2g's per lb of bodyweight.Unfortunately it is not convenient for me to eat all that protein from real foods so I have to get a lot of it from protein shakes.

Running my 2nd cycle. I'm 180. I eat 7 meals a day (every 2.5 hours) and am trying to eat about 3200-3500 calories and 40-45 grams of protein per meal. Probably like 280-320 grams per day. I had read that you're body really can't process more then 40-50 grams per meal. Who the hell knows..So many damn theories in this weightlifting sport...

I weigh 200 lbs. I consume about 320-350 grams a day. 125 grams comes from morning shake, pw shake, pwo shake and casein shake before bed. I also eat 5 whole meals a day.

On a large cycle, I'll put down 3g/lb. of weight, so about 295lbs. x 3 for me :)

not that much, you'd be surprised...I can't eat that much all the time my man :) everything in life is great, BUT only in moderation.

Mr.X

I agree. Moderation is cool. I'm currently cutting up for the summertime, and the last time I gorged was Mother's Day. I think I ate half of the 18# turkey and 2# sweet potatoes. I wouldn't mind hittin' up a buffet tonight but alas, I must follow the protocol I've set for myself.

R.I.P. DIV

My last bulking cycle I was taking in ~450 grams of protein - 140 of those grams coming from powder. Looking back, I can't believe I was eating that much. Now that I'm cutting, I'm getting ~200 grams of protein (more on 'cardio + training' days)

Yo Booey, I'm in the same boat. From Dec. to March it was 400-450 a day. Now I'm droppin' slowly. I'm still around 300 g's but by June 15, I should be around 250. Cuttin' up now to get ready for a small mass cycle starting in late July.

Right now i'm getting about 150 grams a day tops and I haven't lost any muscle size.

I'm about 175lbs right now, 10% and dropping. I get around 250-300g's day. I try and get between 250-300g's per day bulking or cutting. I just drop my carbs from 7-800 grams a day down to 3-400 when cutting :)

About a gram per pound of bodyweight, but make sure you get the vast vast majority of it from real foods as protein shakes are a supplement, but certainly not a substitution.

Anyone know how much protein your body can use in one serving for a 200lb man on cycle?

200lb is about 90kg, so you'll need to take in at least 5000 calories. If you go by the textbook, its a minimum of 1lb per pound, so that 200grams of protein you need. Easy if you get in the 5000 calories and ensure most of them come from proper foods. The shake is only a supplement, nothing more. It is also just as important you eat every 2-3 hours and don't "starve" your body. I like to set my alarm to get up in the middle of the night to have a quick snack at 3am.

Hey RiverRock, I'm not doubting you at all, but I was just wondering if there was any scientific proof that protein shakes like whey are actually inferior to whole food protein like beef, chicken, eggs, etc? I know at my size, with my crappy appetite and fast metabolism, it's basically impossible to get 300 grams of protein a day from whole foods, about half my protein comes from shakes and I can't tell a difference from when I switched from mostly whole food to about 50/50. Only difference is, I save money on food as protein powder is cheaper, and I don't get sick of eating as often :) I wonder how much difference it truly would make where you get your protein from, as long as it's complete protein and you're getting it on a regular basis. That being said, I do still try to get as much whole-food protein as I can, but it's just easier on my body and wallet to do it about half with shakes now.

Good post Tux,

I think the big problem with substituting whey for whole food is the amount of vitamins, iron, creatine that you are denying yourself that come with whole food. Having said that, you'd need to eat 7 stakes (10 ounce) to get the same amount of creatine as you'd find in one helping of creatine mono. So, it makes sence to supplement yourself and yes, you can't make your calories without them. But my point is that your body needs alot more than simple whey and by denying it whole food, you are effectively starving yourself. But, if your eating well and keeping yourself loaded with protein every 2 hours you'll make great gains

"RECALL THAT THE BODY CAN NOT STORE EXCESS AMINO ACIDS AS SUCH, IT HAS TO CONVERT THEM TO OTHER COMPOUNDS. CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION , A PERSON CANNOT GROW MUSCLE SIMPLY BY EATING PROTEIN. lEAN TISSUE SUCH AS MUSCLE DEVELOPS IN RESPONCE TO A STIMULUS SUCH AS HORMONES OR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. WHEN A PERSON OVER EATS PTROTEIN , THE BODY USES SURPLUS FIRST BY REPLACING NORMAL DAILY LOSSES AND THEN BY INCREASING PROTEIN OXIDATION. THE BODY ACHIEVS PROTEIN BALANCE THIS WAY, BUT ANY INCREASE IN PROTIEN OXIDATION DISPLACES FAT IN THE FUEL MIX. ANY ADDITIONAL PROTEIN IS THEN DEAMINATED AND THE REMAINING CARBONS ARE USED TO MAKE FATTY ACIDS. THUS A PERSON CAN GROW FAT BY EATING TO MUCH PROTEIN. "

But uh, don't listen to me.. cause I'm a girl and don't know anything.

Yeah I don't mean to be an arse. And I understand I'm in a man's world. But come on, give some respect when respect is due. Don't toss my shit aside cause I'm a girl. I'll throw a fucking fit bigger than any of you boys.

Shouldn't you be fixing us men folk some 1/ lb burgers, baked potatoes and beer? j/k :)

I shoot for 4,500 cals with atleast 400-450 protein (I'm 210) I'm going by 20 times body weight for cals and 2 times body weight for pro, then adding some since I still do some cardio while bulking, since Rugby starts back up at the end of the summer.

Great post. I feel the same way

yeah I think you have to feel it out alot. everyone's metabolism is different. There is no magic number just I lot of guess and check.

I takes in the proteins, like, two to threess protiens a day mainly in the form of cake proteins. mmm... tastey kakes are the most besteses!

NO no no. 900 grams of protein a day is NOTHING like ANY humans do...LOL :)

think of it this way, 3 times a day, besides my food, I go with a shake like this:

200 g protein (whey is fine, usually I use an egg white protein)
this combo
-> note I stick to proteinfactory ALL the time, they are GOOD and always come to any place I want fast!
5 Tbsp. ANPB
Splenda (I like it sweet ;))
fat free ice cream (4 cups)
sugar free syrup about 3 tbsp.
Vanilla rice milk (about 2-3 cups)
and water
add fruit (to liking)

I can't drink regular milk anymore due to my stomach/stress etc... long story.

Take that shake 3 times a day, that's 600g protein, the rest is in your food.

P.S. no this shake is NOT that large, about a few cups when mixed, it sounds big but if you put some light fruits etc.. it's actually like a milk shake. ->don't forget to blend

You are my new hero. I'm going to have to try that shake. I have never used protein from protein factory but I was thinking of ordering. What is your favorite flavor and sweetener? Do you think that you get better results from the egg white protein than you would get from the whey?

as much as i can absorb at any given time depending on my weight, training schedule, goals and lifestyle at the moment

which generally is anywhere from 250-750 from milk, whole eggs and steak primarily

ill use SOME whey but it just gives me the shits, and i dont beleive much of the protien in veges or chicken is utilized that well so i avoid those

I go with splenda for the taste. Egg white is surely the way to go, but to be optimal, do 70% egg white/20% whey/10% caseinate.

Hehehe dont thinbk either of us could efficiently process that much protein in one sitting bro we are only around 180 and he is almost double our weight. :insane: :worried:

True, so I'd cut the shake in half lol! I don't care HOW big he is, being able to suck down a shake like that 3 times a day still makes him superhuman in my book! :)

I used to think protein was protein but now I see it isn't. What is your reasoning behind your opinion that egg white is the best? Thanks for your help.

better quality, better amino absorption....whey can be used as glucose by the body at almost a 50-54% rate, the great Dan Duchaine always preached egg whites :) as always, the man was a genius.

Good enough for me! Thanks for the reply and K to you.

Mr. X, on that protein shake you make, are you buying the egg white protein and the whey protein separately, and mixing them together in the shake? Or do you buy them premixed in that 70/20/10 ratio you listed, by using PF's protein maker option? I'm guessing since you listed egg white protein and whey protein separately you buy them separately and just mix them when you make the shake, but I wanted to make sure. K and thanks for the info and inspiration to suck down huge shakes :)

go to "THE LAB" top right

get the ratio thru the protein factory formula maker - they rock of course!

I NEVER mix them together, way too much pain in the butt, ProteinFactory.com provides you with ALL the ratios you'll ever need - they are a TOP notch company!

Just ordered up 4lbs or so to try, but I went 60% egg, 20% casein, 20% whey. I wanted a little more casein in there for slower digestion at night, but it's still lots of egg protein. I'll hit up about 300+ grams a day of protein soon, and start my Tbol... and maybe some tren and T3... hehehe, if that doesn't get me lean and hard as a rock nothing will :)

At least 300g in diet, meat, fish, chicken....and another 200-300grams with protien shakes. I'm in the 260+ pound range tho bro.

Looks like great stuff and really good price. I wonder if you use any of the additives towards the end such as the vits and minerals? I can't seem to see what they are actually. Thanks for any help.

You can add things like glutamine, creatine and even fats (omega of course) to your protein w/ protein factory, the vitamins are not really an issue since you should be doing multi-vits. daily. THE LAB at PF is real helpful in picking fats etc.. I usually will add some glutamine and some hemp or flax depending on what type of diet I'm on.

I am about to do a test e/EQ cycle and will of course be taking a multi. I have flax oil, so what else would you reccomend? I know I won't lose much fat on this cycle but I want to not gain any extra if at all possible. Thanks. Oh hey, does their chocolate flavor taste good and does it mix well with just a spoon or does it need to be blended?

I would go with some flax and some glutamine, of course creatine is a good option too - I've also suggested in the past the use of Hemp, you might try that out.

The PF protein can just be mixed like pudding, it mixes pretty well IMO.

Mr.X

About 1.2/lb when Bulking/swapping
2.0-2.5 when cutting.

Although i will be adding protein shakes next month which should give me an extra 100g a day or so.

Mr. X, what are your thoughts on casein and milk protein powders?

I've added them before, but not all people can handle the milk based proteins - for me, my stomach just doesn't work well w/ them.

Mr.X

Lol, whey is a milk powder too. Milk protein powder is just the original powder, whey and casein are the two main constituents of milk protein. The only non-milk protein powders are egg and soy as far as I know. NOW I see why Mr.X uses all that egg protein, he can't handle the milk, bwahaha. Damn dude, I bet you can melt through leather seats when you let one rip after a 200g egg protein shake :D

Not only do I use egg protein due to it's superior quality but I also belive that milk products are inferior to egg/meat based products, and current statistics show that over 25-40% of Americans are lactose intolerant (some are not even aware of the problem) that puts milk based proteins on the problem level.

Actually, the egg protein doesn't make me "rip" anything, the milk does big time.

Mr.X

Well then, since my new protein from PF is on the way, and it's 60% egg, I should probably see a difference from my pure whey protein. If I do, I'll use 70% egg next time like your blend. I'm the opposite of lactose intolerant, i drink a half gallon of milk or more every day. On a diet, it's the carb countdown milk, only 3g lactose per cup and 12g protein. I don't get ANY egg protein though... so this will be a big change. If I like it, and I grow, I'll bow down before you and declare you the God of the Penguin God :D

I was just asking about the casein and milk protein because I recently tried a product that had this protein and I really liked the consistency. I ate it like a pudding and it was very filling, which is a big bonus while I am dieting.

I myself bieng one will def have to try (egg white pp from PF). To combat stomach pains tho with milk based p powders i use 1/2skim1/2water and a ton of ice and i always add fruits. With the fruit it just tastes better. Honestly nowadays i won't have a shake without starwberries and or bann - blueberries combo. Oddly enough being lactose intolerant i love the way my shakes coat my stomach and just give me the all around good feeling afterwards. then i start to let em rip... LOL But nothing imo is worse than what creatine does to my stomach. never fails

OK, so I finally got my protein from PF. While it took 2 weeks from the day I placed my order, it was a very good price for a specialized combo so I do like that. I had some last night and man.....it tastes pretty bad. I got a 60% Egg Whites, 20% casin, and 20% whey. I got chocolate with splenda as the sweetener and got some glute in there as well. It seems to mix better than my old stuff, but the taste.....hhmm. I mixed it with some skim milk last night, and then tried some blu and strawberries this AM and no luck. I am used to using spelnda to sweeten and tried all the different proteins that are in there, but not all at once so maybe that is it? I got 5 frigin lbs of the stuff so I wonder if you have any feedback as to what it making it taste so nasty. Honestly it tastes kinf of acidic to me for some reason. I will of course use it because it is afterall just protein and it's already paid for but any feedback on how to make it taste better if I order it again is appreciated.
