Ok I was debating on getting one of those PM powders or something and was just curious if anyone has experience with these supplements and if so whats the best etc..Price dosn't make much of a difference

If you buy pre-made things you'll usually spend more than you have to. By slow protein, zinc/mag, glutamine and whatever else is in them by themselves.

I agree with thai box. My night time protein drink is: 1 multivitamin, 27.5g Problend 55 (whey, egg, and cassienate blend), 1tbs. flax oil, and 16oz milk. sometimes i use 1 scoop of opti-pro meal instead of problend.

Toss in some glutamine.

Yeah, they're definitely a waste of money. You could get an identical product if you ate something with a lot of casein, a bit of fat to slow gastric emptying, and swallowed a multivitamin. You're paying extra for marketing, not quality. Warm some natural PB to soften it slightly, and mix that stuff in with cottage cheese.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I still don't believe that sleep is such a catabolic state that going 6-8 hours without a meal will hinder gains. Getting adequete rest is essential for anabolism, is it not?

I think I would've disagreed with this a year ago, but I think that having a solid 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is very important -- probably more important than waking up to eat halfway through the night. The hormonal benefits of a good night's sleep seem to at least balance out the benefit gained from having a meal in the middle of the night.

See, I can totally understand if someone's a hardgainer and has the metabolism of a hummingbird. In that case, any calorie is a good calorie. But take your average Joe who lifts hard and eats adequetely during the day - they don't need a meal in the middle of the night, they need their rest. There's so many physiologically positive things that can only occur when you're sleeping deeply for hours, to which waking up to drink a shake is detrimental. :)

i agree that the nightime proteins out there now is just a marketing scene to make money...i use Protein Factory nighttime formula with some flax seed oil (much, much cheaper then the nighttime formulas you see in magazines and in vitamin stores...i usually make one serving before bed with water, then usually i have to take a pis$ in the middle of the night, then i down another 1/2 serving (have it already made next to my bed) (depending on what time it is) or some ZMA and glutamine.....this has worked pretty well for me

I drink so much water during the day I always have to get up and piss in the middle of the night anyway. So, I have a premade canned shake next to my bed. I drink half on the way to the pisser and finish it on the way back, then collapse right back to sleep like I would anyway. Takes no extra time at all.
