So what's a good drink to have in a social situation when you want to avoid alcohol, but saying "a tall glass of water" is just not appropriate or too blah when everyone is having a real cocktail? Club soda with a twist of lime? I don't think there's anything other than fizz in that....

What is it not appropriate? I order water everywhere. If you're worried about not ordering a expensive drink leave a tip.

I love the occasional condescending "just water?" I get from servers. It's like they are pissed I don't want something else to drink.

Info I've read says that the "sweet taste" causes the body to think that there will be carbs entering the body after it recognizes the sweet taste. When those carbs don't show up, the body continues to crave the carbs & some studies have found that people will nosh on carbs to fulfill the body's craving for the carbs that it didn't get after ingesting the carb-free sweet soft drink.

However, I think if you recognize that this occurs & just don't eat anything, then you'll overcome it. Diet Pepsi satisfies my sweet craving & actually makes me feel full.

I've heard something like this too... but saying that it causes an insulin spike has GOT to be complete BS....

I used to drink half a dozen a day and was hanging in the high 8% BF level...

I don't think they are healthy for you for other reasons.. but making you fat is not one of them.

A real story here:
My mom, who did little to no exercise, had a 12 pack of coke a day habit, and was a little overweight(typical 60 y/o female in America). After the doc said her triglycerides and cholesterol were too high, he suggested she switch to diet coke(otherwise her diet was OK). Bam, 6 mos later, she's 20lbs lighter and blood work is within normal range. Diet coke did not make her fatter! She lost weight, just by changing that 1 thing in her diet. I'm not suggesting anyone drink 12 everyday, but if you have the choice, a 0 cal beverage would be better.
DUH.......in your mom's case (no pun intended), she nixed about 1500 calories of pure JUNK...think about it.......diet pepsi, coke has what? one calorie????? Diet whatever is FINE........I have one now and again but I drink a ton of 0 calorie drinks and still am sub 7%.....coffee, flavored water, tea, etc. My asparmate levels are probably through the roof, but nothing a little stomach discomfort wont take care of.......

Some people are taking shitload of veterinary steroids from unknown source and they are afraid of aspartame
