The stuff I've seen (and bought myself) is Pinnacle Studio 9. I think I paid about $99 for it. Runs on my laptop. Do video capture off my Sharp handcam.
final cut pro is a little more functional and has good effects pkgs.....I use avid hd which is very pricey, but I`ve got professional projects coming out of it...

Final Cut Pro is considered really good - but it only works on a Mac and of course, the latest Premiere versions only work on Windows. Vegas, I think, only works on Windows. Avid's another animal - they have a consumer level product, but I personally didn't really care for it and never use it.
hansel, Final Cut and AVID are the two biggies in the movie industry. Adobe has definitely improved its product, but many absolutely love Vegas Video as well. From a consumer standpoint, I would look at either Final Cut, Premiere or Vegas Video. Final Cut if you're use to a Mac or want to purchase a new system that's a Mac and the other two for Microsoft users. Adobe's big advantages are now its integration with its other products, such as After Effects and their purchase of Cool Edit (now named Audition). Look at Adobe's Production Bundle. But all the above are worth looking into.
