What would be your top choices if you were getting a new computer?

I'm about to get a new computer. Just curious to know how you would rank the top computers if you were getting a new one. Actually, it doesn't have to be five. I would just like an idea of what the best choices would be.

Oh, and when is the new operating system coming out from Microsoft? Or has it already?

The top computers don't have brand names.

Pick the system specs you want (hard drive size, ram, processor speed, etc) and tell them to someone who knows how to build computers. Find the cheapest prices and have it built for you.

This method will insure that A) you ALWAYS have a faster/better system and B) it ALWAYS comes out cheaper.

I think Dell is the way to go... you can get a top of the line computer for less than $2000, unfortunately i payed $4000 for mine, but that was 2 years ago... and i just bought a laptop from Dell, costed me $2500, i think thats pretty decent.

i think Dell and gateway are pretty comparable, but Warik is right about having one built, it will be cheaper, but get someone who knows what the fuck they are doing of course. I have heard alot of horro stories about home built PCs

Don't give in to the corporates, buy yuor own parts online. Take what godzilla said witha grain of salt. These horror stories where probably people trying to set up a comp that have no clue how to even change the graphics settings. Putting a comp together is simple. You buy a case, motherboard, processor, disk drive, hard drive and piece them all together with some odds and end wires and hook up the speakers monitor and keyboard and there ya go. Install windows and you have instant computer.

I'm getting an AMD Palomino processor in about a month or so runiing at like 1.5 ghz with a new Abit kg7 ddr ram capable mobo and all that is only going to cost me like 400 bucks, maybe less. That setup alone if bought from Dell or Gateway would probably run you like a grand right there, not including software or monitor.

i would do that of course.
But overhere it is cheaper to buy a Dell, then to configure your own computer.
Maybe it is different in the states.

Listen to Warik. I recently had my brother buy the cheapest, best products he could get and then build it for me. I already had a monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and some other shit, so it costs be about 200-250 to make it the monster it is.

Dell is by far the best. Bought a computer last year from them. Everytime I needed infos, tech support re-install windows they answered my call within a minute. Next week I'm buying a laptop from them. It worth the price.
