What home equipment would you buy with a budget of 250.00?

Hi again Ladies!

I would like to know what would be the wisest purchase for some home equipment. I have a total gym and can do many of the exercises (modified, of course) suggested in the shadow plan. I know I can never build my ideal body until I can get routine access to a gym, but until then I'm wondering what equipment I should purchase which would allow the best results for the money. I already spent 10.00 on some extra plates I discovered at a second hand store:)and I'm thinking a medicine ball would be a wise purchase. (EBAY, here I come)

Any suggestions would be great, thanks again!:)

A slow-burst Swiss ball and dumbells in the range you're working. Swiss ball can substitute for a bench and is easier to store, dumbells give you free-weight advantage and all body parts can be worked with dumbells. The stickies have a website that shows all the exercises possible.

Personally, unless you need the contact with others to keep going, as long as you've got room at home, you do not need to go to the gym to get to your goals. Look at all the 'gym problem' stories on the site! I'm happy to work out at home!

get a medicine ball from sport chalet.. or some place like that. You'll end up paying as much in shipping. Good suggestions here already, I'll add for 10-20 bucks.. (this is a good ebay buy) the Gliding discs, cool stuff and killer for variety! www.glidingpro.com looks cheesy but frick an A they WORK and will kick your ass...! I have thera bands too, good for home.

A set of used powerblocks and a basic bench. You can do most of your workout with that. Something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Dumbbells-Power...ryZ44083QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for the link, nsashbl01! Boy that set looks like a piece of sculpture, I may try for something similiar:)

The swiss ball sounds like a good investment as well, I do need to get some dumbells, too. I'll check out the stickies. Thanks wlmcrae!

Good idea, The gliding pro really looks like it will give the legs a great workout:) Thank you, CaliGirl.

Great suggestions, everyone, I really appreciate your help:)

Hey Lulu...
I have not read anyone elses opinion, but I would probably buy a barbell, dumbells. That way I could squat, walking lunges and work almost all body parts, pullovers, biceps, shoulders, triceps you could do on bench to bench in park and cardio also...for free in those wonderful mountains you have. I hope I am not being a wimp, or sounding like there is no home equpiment good enough, I think you can have all that iat hoem and not use it, machines are not my fave, free weight are the best, for me & my core.
i hope I made SOME sense.

One of these, $88:

Plus two of these, $154 pair:

Plus one of these, $20:

$88 + $154 + $20 = $262

HT is right about an Oly set, but I kid you not, I've never touched my big plates, the plates that get used all the time are the 20 lbs and under, even for deadlifting. It's a bugger manhandling those big plates around.

The truth of the matter is, the average woman is never going to need a dumbbell that weighs over 25 lbs.

Now I wanted to get into deadlifting or squatting. To squat safely, you need a cage. I don't have the room in my basement to give up that kind of footprint right now, so I sprung for a trap bar to do deadlifts, which is this little toy:

But I kid you not, with a smart routine using just dumbells and deadlifts you're working your whole body. Throw in regular cardio and some core work with the stability ball, add in what you're already doing on the Total Gym, you're golden.
