I listened to the WHO press conference today, and they stated that quite a few of the cases had not been confirmed by labs.
For example, only something like 40 of the 150 dead in Mexico have been confirmed due to the flu.
They keep saying 'wait for the labs, don't jump to conclusions'
They are also talking about shifting anti-virals from nation to nation if necessary.
The UK has been preparing for a pandemic for five years, there is enough anti-virals for 50% of the populations, and we do have the national vaccine program.
There was a variant of H1 N1 in this season's flu jab, so the immune system should recognise one of the spikes and mount a much faster acquired response.

Same here. People are recovering quickly. People that hink the have it and cause the biggest stink in the ER don't have it. Its funny. No reported cases where I work.
Its the FLU by the way. No need for the US scare. I hate media sometimes

+1people should also avoid drinking excessive amounts of alchohol, as this increases ones chances of bringing home a pig.

You all laugh. But if you look at history, we are due for another "plague" that will take out millions. Do the research. And you think the media is blowing this up. Did you know that the WHO (World Health Organization) worked around the world, had 200 of the top people in the research field working doing shifts 24 hrs a day to try and find a solution to stopping SARS. Remember the 'bird flu'? See what people fail to realize is that the stronger our anti-biotics get and the more we get in our system the worse or stronger these strains get. Which in turn makes it harder to cure. While you and most here find it funny, these researchers are saving your ass. But, they can only do so much. Like I said, look at history. The question isn't "is there going to be another plague", its more like "when" or "what will it be?"

Great post. You are exactly right, the strains are more powerful and all it would take is the right one. The WHO just announced that if the Swine Flu became an epidemic , it would take 8 to 10 months to get the vaccines on the market. by then you are dead
We already have a case here in Costa Rica, 14 potential ones but only 1 was sick.... but we do have a small population, like 4 million..... :s

If you have had previous influenza jabs, then you will have some protection as there are only so many of the H spikes and so many of the N spikes.
One of your memory cells will elicit a much faster response to one of the spikes of the virus.
One of the issues with the deadly strains of influenza is that it killed quite quickly, and the natural progression of the acute to acquired immune response takes two weeks.
If you have had previous exposure (the vaccine), your immune system gets to the acquired immune response faster, and the white cells in your body can start to recognise and kill the virus faster.

Are you sure about this? Because I know that we abuse antibiotics and such builds in the system weakening the immune system altogether. But we are actually talking two different things. It's interesting though. I don't think they would be making quite the uproar if they were not scared though that what they have would even help a little. And we can't say it's the media. It is Governments shutting down flights to Mexico. It is President O'bama saying schools could be affected and shut down til this is under control. I do think it is safe to say it is spreading way faster than SARS. WHO now confirms Germany and.... oh I forget, but another country in Europe. So now we are just about worldwide here. A death is now confirmed in the states. Yeah, I believe if they had a clue on any help they would have come out with it in the news. There is a difference in a influenza jab and a super strain.... this is a super strain....

People have weak immune systems for other reasons than antibiotics.
Antibiotics breeds super bacteria.
Immunisation creates memory cells.
While the flu jab is not specific to this H1 N1, this season's flu jab was four different strains, one of them a human form of H1 N1.
The last time I checked, immunologists were not sure how long memory cells lived for, however, some of our jabs are meant to last for life, for example TB.

Antibiotics are useless against any and all viruses. So it doesnt matter how much antibiotics are in our water.
And the WHO and CDC have to make it a priority. Who wants to be the guy that did nothng becuase they thought it was nothing and it turns out to be something. think about it. With how the media works now a days they blow shit up pople go into panic mode and the goverment has to respond.

Bill O'Reilly keeps calling it the swine flu bacteria, a couple days ago I caught him using it and the very next day he used it while interviewing Glenn Beck, even Beck calls it a virus...doesn't anyone correct that douche?

Ouch, excuse me. I meant the general population in general. Yeah you have antibiotics in your system. Ever drink tap water, then you probably have been exposed to some form of antibiotic. Speaking for myself, I just made a general comment, like most do here at EF.
