WHAT are you and WHY?

A Strength Athlete? (YES for me)

A Strongman?

A Powerlifter?

A Bodybuilder?

I'll start. I am strength athlete bc I am an athlete before anything else. I can play any sport efficiently and on a very high level. I do not want to single myself out and be one particular thing. I want to be excellent at everything. Strength Training is perfect for me in that respect. :)

I didn't want a poll bc I want to see what you are and why you are. What's the make up? Thanx in advance

I am a weak little bitch.

However, I would like a blend of all the above and am working towards it. The main problem is finding some good bros out here to play with and keep me going. I have more later but that is a pretty good summary.

I would have to pick strength athlete.

I started out wanting to be a bodybuilder and just get freakishly huge but thats just not me anymore. I've always excel'd at pretty much every sport skillwise but I never had the physical conditioning. I will though, after I finish my bulk up...got 1 week left... I will be working on my speed, quickness, endurance, and of course strength. :)

None of the above. I am a weight lifter.

I'm not interested in weights as a means of competition - except for maybe competing against myself.

But I do like getting bigger and stronger.

I am a bodybuilder by choice. I started just to become bigger. At 6'3 and 144lbs, I was considered a walking pencil. From the first day I gripped the cold iron in my hands, I knew I could never let go. It became a love affair. The feeling I got inside each time a lift went up in weight, I gained some size, I got a good pump or worked up a good sweat, was just incredible. It gave me a feeling of self worth, a new found confidence. I no longer walked around with my head down. I held my head up high, I looked people in the eye. It was if I found the missing piece of the puzzle in my life. I had finally found a solid ground. I had become much more than just a casual trainer, I became a bodybuilder for life.

I am a strongman primarily, but a little of all of the above. I use the powerlifts to improve at strongman, I like to have a decent physique, and I want to be more athletic all the time:)
good post bro

Strength Athlete/Part time bodybuilder :)

Edit: Oh, forgot about why. Because I train mainly for sports...sometimes for size.

I was going to say exactly that. I have competed in bodybuilding shows and I will again. But that's not the reason that I do what I do.

an aspiring bodybuilder
i luv the challenge of balancing out the entire physique
planning out meals
the only one who can affect my performance is me
and if i stick with it.....

one day i will achieve my goals, and it will be well worth it

Strength athlete/bodybuilder

I want to compete in a year, but sports especially rugby mean the world to me.

so size but functional size

I would say a strenght athlete... though I have not been invoved much in athletics for a while, though that is where my roots are... would like to ideally get back to training for some type of athletic endeavor...

Powerlifting sounds like a blast, and I always liked lifting as much as possible, though I would have a LOT to learn/experience before I would feel comfortable putting myself in the same league (or even neighborhood) as some of our accomplished bros (and bro'ettes) that call themselves by that name... It does require it's own unique set of athletic strenghts and technical competecies...

I guess I would say I am in transition- working on some strength goals until I for certain determine what my next athletic pursuit is...

I'm trying to figure that out myself! I've had people ask me in the gym, "What are you training for?" I just don't know what to tell them!

I've been consistently training for the since the summer of 2002 and have learned soooooo much since then. I've played competitive softball practically my whole life, so I'd definitely fall into the "athlete" catagory. But as far as lifting goes, I'm still exploring many aspects...but not BB'ing. I love the fitness girls physiques but I get much pleasure from outlifting the skinny boys at the gym too! :D

The strongmen stuff looks like a lot of fun...can't wait until Nate's farmer walk implements are done--then we gotta get a tire! We've been dragging the sled lately, which is a great workout...much better than the usual cardio!

For now, I'll keep trying new things and adding them to my arsenal.

I am a husband/father/musician/soldier/trainer who happens to weight train as a lifelong hobby.

I absolutely suck as an athlete. I love to play basketball and softball, but have no natural talent. (my brother on the other hand is a great athlete)
My current workouts are powerlifting style, but size and appearance have also been very important to me. I have never competed as a powerlifter, but will when I come back to the world.

The inspiration and information from the EF crew has been a great motivator for me during the last few months.

Another great thread, Oh Slavic One!

i train like a bodybuilder but i dont consider myself a bodybuilder. i have people ask me am i a bodybuilder, also people ask me am i a powerlifter. i even have people ask me what sport i play. im certainly no athlete. i just like to lift (i like it ALOT).

Im an athlete, i need to be a powerlifter, a strongman, and a body builder all in one. I need strength, i need functional strength, and i need to have muscle to protect myself.

Plus i need to be in tip top cardio vascular condition year round.

I consider myself a little of everything ...

I know I want to excel my body in many dimentions, not just strength or mass ...

Bodybuilding is definitely out for me, powerlifter not me I am not into using support gear, actually I don't think I even know how to use is properly, lol... Strongman-maybe, I train for moving strength but don't have the equipment to truly be a Strongman. An athlete-hmmm seems more like it, I want speed, agility, explosive power, absolute strength, and coordination, so I train that way

Id classify myself as a power builder. Kind of a mix between powerlifter and bodybuilder. My main thing is this: Whats the point of being huge if you cant back up that size with some incredible power? I want to be huge and powerful as fuck. =)

that sounds about right to me.

i'm a powerlifter because the thought of being strong and gettin strong just fuckin motivates me to hit the gym...even solo!!! i also like doing shit that no one else can do and only a select few can. tb

i'm also like beast..want to be big and strong as fuck!! my physique is the combination of bodybuilding/powerlifting..i could go either way, but powerlifting is an addicting sport!!! tb

Thats true. Until recently I was into HEAVY bodybuilding. Real heavy weights, but BB style none the less. Now 50% of my training is PL style. My benching still isnt using the PL form, but I apply alot of the techniques. And one rep maxing has become a major addiction to me. Power racks are something I just recently started using. Im definately addicted, especially after finding Elite.

I'm a funtional athlete, which to me means having a body that is in the proportion that I am fast and agile and can actually be good at what I like, which for me is play tennis. Lifting weights just helps in that I've done it all my life and it keeps me strong and fit and injury free for the most part and still at the absolute top of my game at 40. When you get up to this age in a competitive sport and are still playing tournaments and going up against guys half your age, I think weightlifting is one of the things that makes all the difference in beating out everyone else. Plus, it makes me look good which never hurts. I think being a fat slob would have to be overrated.

im very athletic, but that is just a plus for me...i started lifting with the intention of improving my body...thank god i wasnt going for strength! in my opinion, i look to be much much stronger than i actually am...im only 20, so maybe i just need to grow up a little

I thought you use to be a professional fighter or something. What kind of professional athlete were you? When you say you can play any sport at a high level, I sure doubt this. Most sports require much more than just strength and speed. Won't help you at all in golf, bowling, etc, etc, etc, You have said, You can't believe that I would compare myself to you, because you are an elite athlete in the top 1%. What type of elite athlete are you? I wasn't comparing myself to you in that regard( your chosen sport) as I recall, it was on a strenght level that I was comparing myself with you and I am stronger than you last I checked and pound for pound way stronger.:)

hehe I got that from the "Iron Bull". That guy was strong as hell, curling those 150lb dumbells and emphasizing using the whole body in a movement for power. I like that theory. When your in a fight, its not like you need "strict" form, youd be wise to throw your entire body into those strikes. JMO

I agree. Well it depends how you use you body. If you swing to much on someone that knows what they are doing you will leave you body wide open. But in a general sense you should definately use you body, it just depends how much?

thats true. Im just against the theory that a person can "isolate" a muscle completely. Some people seem to believe that strict form will do just that. As if the auxillary muscles werent involved. I like to use alot of Auxillary haha Id rather swing up a 205lb barbell curl then try and isolate it using only the bicep.

Oh. In this sense I completely agree with you. I am not even completely sure what I was arguing before. I have spent the past 4 days studying my ass off and i have gone kind of crazy.

haha I respect that. I do not have the patience, nor do I have the will to develop the patience to study anything, aside from lifting. Im already messed up enough without that!! haha :D

Trying hard to be a strongman. My gym training is mostly a mix of powerlifting and some olympic lifting, but everything I do in the gym is done to help with the strongman events.

JMO but never did like the pound for pound excuse. Overall strength is all that matters to me.
???

Pound for pound excuse? Tell me, what is more "impressive"--

a 150 # guy who DL 500 lbs
-or-
a 250 # guy who DL 500 lbs

Frankly, pound for pound does matter (at least to me) or why would they have weight classes in boxing, MMA, wrestling, OL, BB, PL, etc, etc?

I'm kinda a dick who loves to train. I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to train with some phenominal bodybuilders. I started lifting hard with the desire to change my body composition. After I started to notice changes I set a few goals.

First I wanted to see a vein in my arm. Not an unrealistic goal. Then I wanted to see a vein in my leg. Again not unrealistic.
Now I want to se the veins in my abs. Like that's gonna happen.

I train to fight. Because first and foremost I am a fighter. However, I believe that due to the compulsive nature of my person it will not be long until I am training to be a full fleged body builder.

I'm a sick, sick, man. I want the world and I will not compromise. I train to win.... because there is no other way. So I guess it all comes down the the fact that I'm a strength training body builder. Does that work?

With females it is different IMO, but with guys it doesn't matter. I rather be big and strong, I would hate to be 150lbs and have same strength (although, i'm sure, it would be great in competition).

They obviously have different weight classes because they see the bigger weight to have a better advantage ... I like that advantage and I will make it work for me.

I have to admit, it is motivating to see a 150lbs guy pull a 500deadlift, but I really don't wanna be that guy (no offense to anyone).

Also, take into account height. Height to weight ratio matters a lot, I am refering to someone my height (6'3+) when I bring up the 150lbs. Obviously, 150lbs is pretty damn big for someone who is 5'0. So it is all relative ...

hehe I look at it like this. If someone is so strong, or so powerful, let them take on anyone. Why have limits? Just dont appreciate people telling me Im strong "for my size". That kind of thing. I dont get that too much anymore, and now I want to just become "strong" regardless of size. JMO :D Like your new pic Nonerz hehe :p

i'm a weight lifter. i'm not an athlete.

i had someone in the gym ask me what sport i was training for...it really threw me off. i never thought much about WHY i was training other than it made me feel awesome. i guess lifting weights fulfills my desire to be active since sports never did -

It is impressive no doubt. And maybe the classes motivate those who compete. Cuz it gives them a chance. But IMO I think just about anyone can weigh 300lbs. It may be tough as hell, but I think it depends on how how hard someone is willing to train and eat, or the amount of drugs they are willing to put in thier system. That person has to be purely dedicated to the cause and for many years. I dont believe in a limit. I beleive if I were to tell people on here "Your strong for your size", that would be talking down to them. Cuz I used to hate, and still hate when people say that to me. Dont pay me any mind though hehe

Would that be remotely like someone saying, "You're pretty strong...for a girl."

In saying that, I see your point...I am a big UFC fan and really enjoyed when there were no weight classes...just all out mayhem! Many of the huge guys got their asses kicked, that's for sure.

I think height is a great advantage to have and huge IS fun (to a degree :) ) but not everyone is blessed with a 6'3" frame. The key is maximizing your potential...it's all relative. You gotta work with what you got, that's all!

BTW, you're pretty strong for your size beast. :finger2:

:) Just jerking your chain!

A christian who messes up entirely to much. A weight lifter who is dedicated to that hobby, a young man who wants to be successful, and last but not least......a Dork haha

haha Jerk that chain too hard and youll rip the ring out of my neck. :D Yea I think its alot like saying "You're pretty strong...for a girl." I dont see a 6'3 frame as a blessing, look at Franco Columbo and alot of other shorter guys. Seems they lift the most weight. Ive often thought it would be better to be even shorter. There are lots of factors involved in strength though. JMO :D

Take it easy now. This has to be coming from someone that is under 6'.

Yea guys under 6' may lift more in the short term but longer levers create more power in the long run.

Stay humble brutha

haha Sorry bro. Im not really short or tall so Im really neutral to the subject. Was just trying to say height isnt necessarily an advantage, it can be Im sure.
