There are some viruses going around that spoof the email-of-origin.
That means that they will identify so-and-so's email as the account that sent it, when actually it comes from *another* person, and masks itself at the return email address. That means it gets big@boss "blamed" as the sender, when it might really be going out from someone else. The purpose is to make the infected account harder to find, since big@boss might be clean.
I have a spam dump account from a free .com that has fallen victim to that. Someone who has my email in their addy book is infected, but when the virus disperses from them it sticks MY address on the return. So everything thinks ol' smokinghawk is spitting viruses like mad, when I' mclean.
I have no idea who the actual origin is, but whener I check my dump account there are a dozen "mail undeliverable" messages identifying say, the klez worm, when mysystem is clean. Since my email is spoofed as the return addy, all the rejected virus messages get sent back to me, even though I didn't send them in the first place.
Smart virus.
