Weird ass weight equipment

Madd Hatter

I posted in the chat forum about the relics in my gym's free weight dungeon. My first workout (chest and back) went ok, but today was legs. Since I suffer from GNS (gangly nerd syndrome) I'm still using the Smith Machine for squats. So I go to it, and when I unlock the bar, it GLIDES up and down, almost on its own (this is the best way I can describe it). At my old gym, you unlock the bar, that sucker will descend like a normal bar. So I put a couple 45's on for my warmup, and I couldn't even feel em! WTF?!?! So I throw on a couple more, and at first I'm thinking this still is screwy, but by 8th rep I'm feeling it and I couldn't even hit 20. Another thing I found odd however, is I felt it in my back a lot more than I ever did before. The machine is a black Cybex, looks somewhat new, has big handles for safety clips with 3 different locks (only new thing in the room). My old gym's machine was a white Cybex with just little L shaped rods for safetys. So WTF is going on here? Am I getting an inferior workout on this new machine (I mean inferior even for a Smith Machine)?

After my leg workout I'm doing some random ab and stretching shit. First I get F'd because there's none of those adj. flat benches with the handhold at the end to do leg lifts on. Then I get on what I thought was the "back-doer" (this is what I call it, at my old gym it was a angled stump thing, with footholds and pads at your waist, you could do hyperextensions with them). This thing had leg holds at the same height as what turned out to be a chest pad, with handles under the pad. I could not get my waist over the pads to do HE's. WTF was this thing for? And there's no backdoer? I've been ripped! So I can't do my 2 favorite misc. BS time-killers that produce a good stretch.

The Shoulder Horn thing is up there on the weird scale.

every smith machine that i've encountered has some sort of counterweight system that effectively makes the bar lighter... don't do squats on the smith machine...

I've tried using the smith machine for shits and giggles. That thing is an abomination. It totally throws me out of whack, puts huge stress on my knees and back. When I do regular squats, the movement is smooth and easy, and is easy on my joints. The Smith Machine hurt, and I didn't feel comfortable at all.

So like everyone said, stick to squats. It'll feel way better, and even easier if you ask me.
