Don't take huuuuuge amounts of vitamin C at a time !

Dr. Levine and his colleagues have found that the body's absorption of orally ingested vitamin C decreases as the dose increases.

Thus while 80 per cent of a 100 mg dose is fully absorbed less than 50 per cent of a 1250 mg dose is actually absorbed.
Dr. Levine concludes that doses greater than 500 mg contribute little to plasma or tissue stores. He also estimates that even at doses of 1000 mg it is extremely difficult to achieve a blood plasma concentration much above 100 micromol/L.

Intravenous infusions, on the other hand, can achieve plasma levels as high as 5000 micromol/L with a dose of 5 to 10 grams.

I use C-plus citrus bioflavonoid caps by twinlab.2 caps provide 1000mg vit.C / 650mg citrus bioflavonoids complex / 50mg rutin. I take 4 4x's a day. The bioflav.complex makes it all the more potent.

Anthrax, have you seen any articles/studies done with Ester-C (with Calcium Ascorbate) rather than regular ascorbic acid? This would be interesting since ester-C is supposed to be a much more absorbable type.

Also would taking Vit-C 500mg (as above) w/last meal 8pm be a good idea? Thanks... keep the studies comming....

Here is what I have found on Ester-C :

A recent double-blind study compared the absorption of ascorbic acid alone, ascorbic acid with bioflavonoids and Ester C®. Ascorbic acid and ascorbic acid with added bioflavonoids were as good as or better than Ester C; at no point was Ester C proved superior (JADA, 1994, 94(7):779-81)

I have heard oposite studies on vitamin C
Many of then were stating that regular ascorbic acid was as "good" as Ester-C, buffered, flavonoids, rose hips,..... vit C

Good Info

Vit C is water soluble, so you should take it evenly over the day. Everybody has a different threshold of Vitamin C, which is until you get diarrea.
Palus Lining advocated use of high levels of Vitamin C, while others say more than 5oomg per day is a waste and can actually be a pro oxidant...the argument continues! I am not familiar with effects on intestinal flora, as it you would hope it would be practically digested by that time and stomach acids are stronger than ascorbic acid.
I would suggest a daily dose of 2 gms over the entire day and use about 6 gms in times when you
may be run down etc.
