Vacation

I'm going on vacation.. Okay it's not really a vacation when I am going to go visit family.

I am staying in a hotel, I know where a gym is so I can work out, but how can I stay on my diet????

I have been doing my new meal plan for a week and I feel great. It's only going to piss me off and make me in a bad mood if I can't continue.

Any suggestions?

What type of diet are you on?
Low carb, High Protein it's very similar to Spatt's cutting diet. I modeled mine off of hers.

Will most of your meals be with family at there home, out, or by yourself?
Some of my meals will be with family, but most will be in restaurants...

How long?
I will be gone for 1 week

Does the hotel allow you to use one of their dorm fridges for a fee?

I will have to call the hotel to see if I can barrow one of their refridgerators...

Will you be in a major city?
Major city, I wish Potlatch, Idaho. Try finding that on a map. Population of cows is more than people. Po Dunk Town USA

What I usually do is pack lots of protein powder and protein bars - that usually ends up being my breakfast (since no one in my fam eats healthy) and snacks.

In restaurants, I only eat grilled chicken salads, and I ask for a tablespoon to measure dressing (I'm low carb, mod fat, so I add 1 T dressing to my salads - oil & vinegar only). If you're on a lower fat diet, just ask for balsamic vinegar on the side.

Yes, it makes for a boring eating vacation, but it works. Good luck!

Hi Tan 27... I just finished a vacation and I eat high protein, low carb, moderate fats...

So, to avoid the hassles from others, I ordered grilled steaks, fish, and chicken, which is really not that strange, and you can find on almost any menu or in anybody's home hopefully. I have 'offered' to cook for people or buy dinner or groceries in exchange for their graciousness/hospitality, too. Every restaurant I went to served me oatmeal or egg white omelets. When it came to eating at someone's home, I would eat what I wanted from what was offered. I did not have a problem saying I am on a diet... bars and shakes can be expensive sometimes. I would just not eat the pastas, cakes, cookies, ice cream that was offered. I'd have a diet coke instead. I hope this helps! Check out the diet discussion board, too for great info!

Just eat whatever, but be sure to do at least 2-3 hours, if not 5-6 of HEAVY hiking and snow shovelling and sled-dragging and whatever else you can find that fires up your metabolism.

OK, sorry, that probably doesn't help you much, but really, trust me, it works :)

The other suggestions here are great, too.

(And carrying carrot and celery sticks around helps)

When I go on vacation, I simply partition out a bunch of protein powder meals in Ziploc baggies in advance, and eat them mixed with a little water in a disposable cup - like pudding. No refridgeration nescessary, although they tend to look at you funny in airports if they search your bag. ;)

It's really not hard to find food in restaurants or at family gatherings that you can eat, no matter which dietary regime you subscribe to. Just depends on how strict you want to be. I say as long as your pants'll still fit the day after, enjoy yourself, and don't worry about the macronutrient composition. You ARE on vacation after all!

For the hotel room, you can bring along a few pouches of tuna...no can-openner required and no messy liquid in the pouches vs. cans. Lean Body for Her sells protein powder in individual pouches and it mixes very easilly with a spoon and water.

Eating out will be easier to stay on track than eating with family so do that as much as possible. Your family should be willing to help you out though...let them know before you get there if there's something in particular (plain salad or what ever) they could have there for ya.

Good luck and enjoy the visiting! :)
