treadmill running vs. road running

As a former high schooland collegiate runner-
I'd say running outside is the best choice, but sometimes a treadmill is a good alternative. It really depends on time-if you are doing long runs, running outside is way better. If you don't have time for a long run and you're at the gym just go over to the treadmill. Running outside is better for your form and the varied terrain of outdoor routes is better for working all the muscles in your legs. I didn't use treadmills that much but sometimes in CO it was so frickin cold I had to run on a treadmill inside.

Problem with treadmills is they partially eliminate hamstings and glutes. These are the pulling part of your stride and are unused on a treadmill where you don't have to pull against the ground. If you are training for a running event then don't get on the treadmill. For cardio either is fine but actual running is more beneficial to the body.

Ahh you know I always new it was less work but I never really thought about why besides propelling yourself didn't think about what muscles were most effected by it. nice answer.

No problem enock as a gym manager I need to know the good and bad of all my equipment. So I researched and talked with training experts and this is why I am anti treadmill.
