Torchbearer of the JOHNSON LEGACY hospitalized

Ryan, you're correct in saying that LBJ can not be blamed entirely. But Congress is not to blame, at least for the reasons you mentioned. No war was declared, so its control was severely limited.

And if Johnson's Great Society were so great, why didn't he get re-elected?

I disagree with you, Congress can be blamed, in part. While the President has come to declare war, Congress has the constitutional power to prohibit taxpayer funds from going towards war expenditures. Thus, Congress could have stalled the action, if it had really wanted to.

We should also remember that the intent behind the Vietnamese War was admirable----to prevent aggression.

Johnson didn't seek reelection because of 1) Vietnam, and 2) his support for Civil Rights was very unpopular in much of the country. Remember, this was the 1960's and much of the electorate was still not ready to recognize equal rights for all.

I doubt Johnson would have even carried the state of Texas upon reelection, particularly considering ultra-conservative Texas politics at the time. Support for African-Americans was often seen as a rejection of the "white" way of life---unfortunately.

Johnson wouldn't have carried Texas because it had become common knowledge how many deceased voters sided with him.

All in all, Johnson lied to the American people about Vietnam. Continuously telling the public we are winning, yet that was never really the case. He should have listened to the French, and avoided our own Dienbienphu.

And btw, I was under the impression that only Congress could declare war...

you're right, Congress can only declare war---technically. But to a large degree that has become a constitutional technicality rarely enforced.......the president has now come to do it unilaterally.

Example, If I'm not mistaken--Congress never declared war during the Gulf War--Bush acted alone.

great guy that Johnson. Managed to kill of 35000 boys in Nam through mircromanagement and politicization of the war effort. There's a black wall in DC that is a testament to the greatness of LBJ. RyanH, have you ever seen anything other than the inside of your own arse?

oh the headache, ryan you only seem to praise liberal/democratic presidents of the past leaving out those conservative/repulicans who did as much if not more for our country. i can see the bias here, but that's fine as i've come to expect that from you.
