I mix my protein powder with instant coffee
1 spoon instant coffee
1 scoop of Vanilla Protein powder or more
Skim milk

If you use plain protein powder add Vanilla extract for taste and splenda for sweetness. :p

I love it, I get my protein and my caffeine fix all in one drink!
Try it

How much vanilla sugar would you put in? I make espresso, would I have to cool down the espresso before I mix? Would this be a good preworkout shake?

That sounds handy cuz i need a protein shake in the morning cause i dont have much of an appetite, and if i drink a cup of coffee also thats like a pint and a half in my bladder then an hour trip to college, not enjoyable. Might try mixing cofee on monday

i've done this with chocolate protein powder right before my cardio first thing in teh morning, its not bad at all either.

EDIT: I had wrote out a whole thing about why carbs are superior to protein before cardio, and they would be to support a person who's priority is cardio, but I suppose I should modify this for bodybuilders. this is my new equation:

empty stomach > protein

normally I would recommend carbs before cardio for better workout, in a nut shell you are low in glycogen when you wake up, so you want carbs to burn over protein because protein takes more energy, lowers testosterone, and increases insulin when converted to glucose in gluconeogenesis. this is why you shouldnt take protein before lifting, as you want those extra ATPs (and not the other negatives). studies prove that exercising on an empty stomach burn quite a bit more fat. I am unsure how this affects metabolism though, what are you teaching your body? exercising moderately and not fast burns more fat, and also trains your body to go for the fat quicker than glycogen. you would think this and going on an empty stomach would prove very beneficial, however I am unsure about metabolism increase, as you burn the most fat at rest, so it is most beneficial to raise metabolism when doing cardio. for this reason it might be better to train faster.

I am going to continue searching for studies on muscle loss with cardio, if its possible to measure that, and try to tie all these things together.

if you know what youre talking about please try and help me out here

I think it also has to do with which muslce fibers your body is using. Long distance runners are generally slim compared to the sprinters counter parts which have legs like trucks.

well I think this is because sprinters generally lift more weights because they need the fast twitch power. I am a distance runner, and also love weight lifting, and although it is more difficult for me to gain weight im up to 170lbs (pretty big for a runner), and can say I am bigger and stronger now than most sprinters when I was in high school. distance guys just dont put as much emphasis on lifting cause its not gonna help as much
