workout/nutrition and low thyroid hell
My wife writes:
I'm at the gym 1.5 hours at a time. I vary and change up to avoid General Adaptation Syndrome. Currently I do weight lifting for one body part per day (including a whole workout each for triceps, biceps, chest, back, legs, or shoulders) plus at least a half hour of cardio. Some days I'll do an hour of cardio and abs and no weights. I do a certain amount of "intuitive training" listening to my body so I will vary the schedule based on what my body tells me. Though I tend to be at the gym 5 or 6 days a week, very occasionally only 4 days.
Current workout is 3 exercises per body part, 4 sets per exercise (not including warm up). Depending on body part (and old injuries) I'll use a weight I can lift 10-15 times.
Food (I use a palm pilot with Diet Log software so I can track pretty closely)
Sample day
Pre-workout: Zone bar 40-30-30
Post workout: toaster waffle with nf cream cheese and 1tsp peanut butter plus a protein shake with 1/2 banana and silk (soy milk) (Mix 1/2 meal replacer with lo-carb protein)
Snack: soy crisps/ 1/2 cup NF cottage cheese
Lunch: grilled chicken or fish, and grilled or steamed veggies with "butter spray"
Afternoon Snack: Pria bar or some peanuts
Dinner: Lo-carb Protein shake
Usually comes out to:
150-175 grams of protein, 125-150 grams of carbs, 30-40 grams of fat, and 1600-1800 calories
I've eaten less, I've eaten more. This is what I can eat to maintain my weight. I am fairly active in daily life.
I'm 5'2" and currently weigh is about 134. I look fit, curvy and busty. If I flex, you can see that I have some decent muscle development for a 42 year old woman. (Most people think I am in my early 30's.) My legs look great, my glutes look pretty decent, my hips are well...hippy, my waist is small, (hourglass shape) my abs are covered in a layer of body fat (I've never had kids), my back is fairly well covered in a layer of body fat, too. My arms and shoulders have a little bit of shape and definition. My excess body fat is fairly evenly distributed. I do not have a pear shape or saddle bags.
I really do work out consistently and eat mindfully. I drink 1.5-2 gallons of water a day. I use good form. I read everything and incorporate a variety of training principles. I have, in the past, done a solid hour of cardio a day and less weight training. There doesn't seem to be much difference in my body no matter what I do.
Any thoughts? I sure would appreciate it!
