get this, my lawyer did a search to get the paperwork in order incase we divorce and it turns out we were never legally married. the paperwork never got filed. it shows that we paid for one, applied for one, but it never got filed. weird shit. we did everything downtown but its a clerical error. it never was a legal marriage. what a way to find out after 10 years of what we thought was marriage.

not to be shallow, but does this work out to your financial benefit?

Wow, that's crazy. So what are you going to do. SOunds like you were getting ready for a divorce, are you going to split or make it legal?

Ooooh, sorry to hear that....although maybe it's a good thing?? :worried:

we don't know what to do its weird. we talked about divorce and all and now we kinda are without all the headaches. it is a weird relief kinda feeling.

In a commonlaw state, once you live a certain # of years with her you're pretty much married anyway.

yea in florida its 7 years but it has to be continuous. we lived in maryland for 3 so that leaves us 2 years shy since we didn't move there till after our first 2 years of marriage. my lawyer told me about that also.

I'm wondering if they still got tax benefits. Weird.

Yeah you would think the IRS would at least check to see they were legally married. Did you two have a marriage certificate and all that?
