These "high dollar" tanita scales...

clearly, the answer here is for shadow to do a road tour and personally do all of our body fat measurements.

Yeah, I got about the same when I put myself in as "normal"... did she put you in as an athlete or "normal"? I would go back and try it as an athlete just for the hell of it... it will probably be more accurate...

I've also noticed, as Shadow said, it varies a lot. I've measured myself same time of day, same weight, same everything, and had it be 2% off from the previous time. It's not as accurate as it should be, but it's probably more accurate than a retard with calipers ;)

Nope, I have myself saved as User 1 on the Tanita I own as "athlete" due to the instructions saying that someone who exercises like I do should not be put in as normal.....

I've measured myself in the am, after waking, after going to the bathroom, etc & it says ~ 34% most of the time, which I know for a fact I'm not.... hence, I figured it was wrong...

That is obvously the most reasonable, logical answer..... Shadow, you'll need directions....

I have a caliper much like the one you described... I measure and re-measure getting the same reading which is about 3% less than the Tanita scale, hand-held bio-impedence machine, and the calipers at the gym... perhaps I'm doing something wrong, lol

I was calipered at between 16-17% (depending on who was doing it) and mybodycomp (yes I know) puts me at 18%. The new Tanita my husband bought for Xmas says I am 22%! :P I'm pretty sure that's not true - I'd take it back for one with an athlete mode, but probably not even worth it. It might be useful for 'trends', tho.

The weight, however, appears to be right on. I tested it with a couple of varying size dumbbells.
