The sports corner

Is anyone else getting fuckin pumped for baseball season? There is nothing like it. And starting off with Yanks-Sox?! UNREAL! Can;t wait to just sit on my couch for hours on a sunny sunday afternoon with all the windows open watching Mussina throw his knuckle curve.

I also have my first fantasy bball draft tonight. not really up on the sleepers this year though

Doc Ellis' 1970 No Hitter

You may have heard about "no-hitter" that Bob Milacki's of the Oakland A's pitched last week. No-hitters are pretty rare and this one made the news everywhere. One of the local TV stations refered to it as Milacki's "no-no," a term that originated with Dock Ellis's no-hitter back on June 12th, 1970 for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dock pitched that game on acid. Reportedly he wrote about the experience in his authobiography (Dock Ellis in the Country of Baseball) published in 1976. Here are some interesting excerpts from an account of the game in the August 1987 issue of High Times magazine and from a Lysergic World article from 1993.

"Dock woke up late. Why shouldn't he? As far as he knew, the team had an off day and he planned to take full advantage of it. Three hits of LSD were ready and waiting in the refrigerator."

"A few minutes later, his girlfriend returned with coffee, donuts, and the morning paper. At noon, they dropped acid. Dock put on a record, while his girlfriend read the paper."

"Dock, it says here you're pitching today!"

"Whaaaa...? said Dock groggily. He snatched the paper, scanned the box scores, and read:

PITTSBURGH AT PADRES
DOUBLEHEADER
(6 P.M.) - Ellis (4-4) vs.
Roberts (3-3)
(LW, 1993)

"That's when it was $9.50 to fly to San Diego. She got me to the airport at 3:30. I got there at 4:30, and the game started at 6:05pm. It was a twi-night doubleheader. (HT, 1987)

He makes it to the game and after having someone help him find his locker, he suits up and enters the game.

"Dave Roberts, the Padres' pitcher, had an easy first inning, ending with Roberto Clemente hitting one back to the box. Dock marched to the mound, wondering if he'd last the inning. (LW, 1993)

"His fingers tingled as he squeezed the ball. He squinted to see catcher Jerry May's hand signals. He nodded his head and went into his windup, falling slightly off balance in the process. The ball hit the ground about two feet in front of the plate and skipped into May's glove.

"May signaled for a fastball outside. Dock wound up and threw a hot one over the the corner of the plate - a swinging strike! In was no ordinary pitch: The ball burst from Dock's hand and left a blazing, cometlike tail that remained visible long after the ball was caught.

"Dock felt wobbly on the mound and his stomach was churning with acid cramps. His concentration, however, was superb. As long as he kept to his fastball, the comets kept burning across the plate. All he had to do was steer the ball down the multicolored path. Dock had a crazed look in his eyes and his lack of control was evident to the batters, many of whom were feeling increasingly vulnerable in the batter's box. Dock easily retired three batters in a row [in the second inning]. (HT, 1987)

I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me." (LW, 1993)

The seventh inning:

"The Pirates were clinging to their 1-0 lead. Dock was staring at the scoreboard when he realized he'd pitched hitless ball for seven innings. He smacked Cash on the arm.

"Hey, look," said Dock, pointing at the scoreboard. "I've got a no-no going!"

Cash gave him a blank look. "A no-no?" asked Cash. He'd never heard the term before. But Cash wanted to keep the pitcher loose and happy, so he smiled and said nothing.

Doc Ellis went on to finished the game without a hit. The Pirates won the game, 2-0, despite Ellis walking eight batters. Dock had a pretty good year in 1970. He went 13-10, and helped the Pirates win their first of three divisional championships.

The SF Giants beat the Dodgers today despite Barry Bonds not being in the lineup. If the Dodgers don't cash in on these Barry-less games, they can kiss the division good-bye.

Now that he's free of that bitch Kobe, Shaq is gonna fuck the Pistons right up in the playoffs.

It's official, Lakers miss the playoffs......BAHAHAHA

Lakers miss the playoffs and Miami wins 60+, is there any doubt Kobe would rather be the man than win?

Duncan or not, that's a WHOOPING

I'm telling you guys this team is different, we can play Defense now.
that should show you what duncan does for that team

Dodgers are off to a good start, starting pitching has been solid so far and the offense is coming through. They had a great comeback win tonight, scoring 4 in the 9th to beat the D-backs 9-8, I hope they can keep it up.

They better keep it up...they're gonna need to build a cushion while Barry is out. Cuz once he comes back, the Giants are gonna roll.

Dodgers are now 12-2 and have taken 8 in a row. I know they're not going to keep this kind of pace up the enitre season but it sure makes it fun to be a Dodgers fan right now.

If they can stay hot awhile longer, they'll have a nice cushion to account for any key injuries down the road.

If Schumacher doesn't kick ass at San Marino, I'm gonna kill myself.

Or stop masturbating, which would end up with the same result.

Oh, who am I trying to fool, I won't even cut down from my present twice/day routine. Hell, I may even step it up to three times a day.

I'm afraid you just have a few more hours to live

Hopefully Schumi now belongs to the past and Ferrari's dominance is over for a few years
:)

And if not, I'm sure that they'll find a way to change the rules and juggle the starting grid even more. By next year, Minardi will be on the pole.

Wathever makes the race interesting with as many overtaking as during the Senna-Lauda-Prost-Mansell era

I've been waiting to do this for awhile now: for all the people that were hatin' on Vince Carter a few months back:

IN YA FACE, BIAAAATCH!

Racked up a bunch of 40+ point games, dropped 39 on the Raptors in the midst of the most hostile NBA crowd I've ever seen, and got the Nets into the playoffs. This will go down as the worst trade in NBA history.

It's not interesting to me if the competition is phony and staged. That's sports-entertainment, and I can get that from NASCAR. They have staged, artificial competition all the time, thanks to all the full course yellow flags.

These byzantine rules that make chance and luck major factors for qualifying well are bad sport, in my opinion.

after today's qualif

1] Raikonen = one of the most gifter friver
2] Alonso = another gifted driver in the best car
3] MS = world champion

If only chance and luck dictated F1 we wouldn't have such a result

mavs / rockets today here we go! now you guys get to SEE what I've been talking about :eyes:

the two hottest teams in the league coming into the playoffs square off at 4:30 central time today

mavs lose game 1.

worst game I've seen us play in 30 games.

perhaps we will choke in the playoffs again, and this time to a lesser team.

dirk lost this game for us, his poorest effort since perhaps his 3rd year in the league.

jason terry is our new nick van exel.

without dirk being the all star that he is, tracy mcgrady will destroy us.

the team who wins game 1 wins the 1st round 83% of the time.

our only saving grace is that usually the best team wins the 1st game, and today that didn't happen. plus dallas is an excellent road team.

home court has been stolen, but to me the series isn't over.

Do you honestly expect the Mavs to do any damage in the playoffs? or just win a series?

we always win *A* series. have for the past few years. and that was just with jump shots.

we have never been a defensive team before. now we are. WITH scorers.

we've won 20 out of 24 games before tonight. we finished 1 game behind the spurs.

this team is different. this is not the run & gun jump shot, no big man in the middle shove the rock down our throats mavs of the past 4 years.

dampier can plug up the middle, and we have one of the largest "points for" to "points against" spreads in the league this year as a result of the defense.

devin harris picked up for the loss of steve nash. nick van exel left, and jason terry has become a clone. keith van horn & jerry stackhouse let dirk sit on the bench. michael finley is michael finley, a veteran all star.

avery johnson has been our new head coach (90 playoff games as a player in his career) for the past 18 games, we were 16-2 and only gave up 92 ppg in that span. compare that to the rest of the league and tell me we don't play defense now.

josh howard can defend anyone in the league in only his 2nd year.

different coach, different mindset, different players. first time in 5 years the mavericks have truly changed.

tonight tracy mcgrady was a fucking machine, but if dirk had even been subpar (he was an uncharacteristic 5 of 19), we would've trounced the Rockets.

If we make it past this round and this loss which was a terrible and important loss (game 1) we CAN ABSOLUTELY do damage until at least the western conference finals. no question.

I don't know how to explain it. When you watch a team every night for 7 years, you can just see when fundamental changes happen before the rest of the league realizes it. Even before national commentators and analysts who have to try to cover 30 teams. Kind of like working at a company and having insider information before an earnings report and the stock takes off.

shit. game over for the suns.

Dodgers actually won tonight. It's been so frustrating seeing them struggle like this after their hot start. Everyone knew they were not as good as they were playing at the beginning of the season but they are also not as bad as they are playing right now.

sports sucks from now till the first kickoff.

i hate this time of year.

lol, sorry bud. I think dampier was pretty off

Dodgers and Brad Penny came to an agreement on a 3 year contract extension today worth 24 mil, with a 4th year option. Smart move by the Dodgers IMO, Penny is a very dominant pitcher and seems to be getting better after each start since coming off the DL. So Penny Odalis Perez, and Lowe will be the top 3 in the rotation for atleast 3 years, I wonder where that leaves Weaver, he hasn't been too effective this year so far.

Please let football start soon!!!

Whoah, Button on the pole in Canada, and MS sharing the front row with him? Excellent!!!

They are low in gas = light weight = fast
Still it'll be fun

Damn, it's on CBS. Their F1 coverage is the worst. I wish all the races were on Speed. But if Speed has to share with another broadcaster, I'd rather it be ESPN than CBS. ESPN and ESPN2 used to have excellent F1 broadcasts.
