The "Pump"

needsleep

New member
In all my time playing sports, studying exercise and fitness, reading all the information I could find and reading this forum I keep hearing about "The Pump". I watched Pumping Iron last night for the first time and Arnold described the pump and explained it as blood rushing into the muscle after it has worked. People here keep talking about it and refer to it all the time.

I have to say I have never felt anything close to a "pump", I've thrown up after lifting, I've felt drained and all other kinds of feelings. But never once have I felt any kind of pump, this leads me to believe that there must be reason.

My guesses are; I have experienced it but to me it just feels like normal; I don't have enough intensity (this I cannot believe); For whatever reason I am incapable of having "pumps".

I don't care about if a pump is good or not, I just want to experience it and know what it is. I feel stupid as anything posting this, I feel like some woman in the 50's posting how she has never had an orgasm.

Can anyone explain the pump thing to me please?

Do your biceps ever feel like they are about to burst out of your skin? How about your chest magically inflating or your erectors feeling like they are twin towers dominating your lower back? No matter how big or small you are, that's the pump.

Do you happen to be on a low-carb diet? When I'm eating fewer carbs than usual, I tend to feel "flatter" and less of a pump after a workout.

At the end of the day, whether your feel the pump or not is of no real importance. You sound like you're working hard enough and that's what matters.

that's like saying:

"what does the sky look like?"
"people always say it's blue in the day and dark an night but i just cant tell if i've seen it or not"

:p

It's not important i am just curious. I take it I'd know if I'd gotten a pump as the feeling would be unmistakable, from that I can infer that I've never had a pump. I've felt my muscles feel incredibly tight but it wasn't accompanied by any other sensations.

oh well.

If your going on how Arnie described the "pump" than no wonder you think you'v never had one.... He said is was better than an orgasim or some shit like that.

what's your workout look like??very Low reps (for me anyway )dont give very much of a pump.

I usually do 3 sets of 8 reps and I get a freaky pump, I'm not a huge guy but I swell like crazy when I lift.

I am training using DC's methods, following them to the letter. Generally doing 6-8 reps on main set and then rest pausing out till 11-15 reps in total. Some muscles are different though, I do 1 set of 8 and 1 set of 20 for legs/quads for example. All weights are at my maximum for the number of reps I am doing.

To tell the truth I don't really care, as long as I keep making LBM gains and lifting gains I am happy.

the pump is awesome. i love it when my chest gets pumped, i look hella huge cuz i have a barrel chest.
