the national guard: good idea or no?

i've wanted to join the military for quite some time now, but i also want to get my degree. so, i was thinking about the national guard, since it's the military and it's part time (or so they say). what do you military people think about the national guard, and what exactly would i be getting myself into?

basically, is it a good idea or not?

Glad to see this post generated a shitload of responses. I am kind of in the same situation. I am almost done with college and was thinking of something along the lines of the reserves. How much longer do you have to go in school? I know theres got to be more military people on these boards.

Lots on Beni's going Reserve like Medical, PX access, training etc.
The only risk is that you get activated and Die...

I used to be a "weekend warrior" for 4 years in ANG.

You will serve one weekend a month 2 weeks field training avery year when you will be gone away to some specific training area..

Bear in mind that as a reserve, you have as much chance to be send to hot places, war zones as every active duty soldier..

Thanks for serving guys!

I was in the National Guard for 6 years. In a practical sense it seemed like whenever there was something big coming up like, a party, a concert or whatever I had drill that weekend which sucked. Also it's not like being in the regular Army for the good and bad. Plus be ready to be activated for state disasters and overseas combat especially with the way the military is today. I was never activated for fulltime duty but came close a couple of times.

If I had it to do over again I probably wouldn't have gone in but that's me.

can they activate you if you're a full time student?

As a weekend warrior you will be serving under two big guys..the Governor and the President and you can get activated by either one!

If you wanna make a career out of it you should look to become an officer vs. an enlisted..better pay, more respect...

Good luck

God bless America!

why do national guard?...the worst mistake in my life was listening to my parents when they told me not to join the military when i was 18.....my sisters b/f is a marine, he's been in for about a year, he's 19 years old....he get's paid $700 a month for rent for an apartment, $200 a month for food, and he's going to school FOR FREE.....and he doesn't do anything after he went through basics, just sits at a desk, or plays war games that he loves....oh yeah he get's paid like $12.50 an hour also....and to top it all off, they will teach you a skill, auto mech, computers etc....it's a great setup if you like the life..i don't think i could stand being around 10,00000000000 guys.

well, i want to do this and continue going to school.

How much longer in school do you have to go? Just finish your degree and apply for OCS. At least you'll get a higher rank. Or better yet, just go Airforce. What do you want to do in the military as far as an mos in concerned?

im not looking to make a career out of the military, i am just looking for the experience and something extra to add on my resume.

You should know that some Guard units are being deployed. But the biggest drawback IMO is if you take any tuition assistance from them you are stuck in that state for a while or you'll have to pay it all back. I joined the guard right after I got off of active duty, lucky for me their was a mistake in my contract and I got out of my enlistment. Good luck. As for your resume, IMO opinion it really doesn't make much of a difference. I have 2 DD214's and it really has not done much for me.

same deal here. I wouldn't go in the reserves, nor would I recommend it to anyone. either go all the way, or don't go at all. and if you want to go, but still have some schooling to finish up, finish your school, and THEN think about going in, since you have a degree, cert, whathaveyou. you could probably find something better outside the military, but if you join the military with your degree, you could be a commisioned officer, which has better benefits than an enlisted serviceman.

I would suggest finishing school, in your case poink.

Yes and no. If you are in high school they can't take you out of high school but they can activate while in college. I joined while still in high school and Desert Storm was just starting but I was told if my unit was activated which it wasn't I wouldn't have to go. However, there were thousands of college students who had to leave school to serve in Desert Storm. There's no longer a draft so they have to get the soldiers to serve during wartime from somewhere. If you are really serious about the military. I'd go ROTC while in college and join the National Guard too. You'd be classified as a cadet while in the guard and you'd be serving so you'd be getting jump on a military career plus cadets get paid as E-5 (lowest sergant in the army. There was a cadet who went to my college in my unit. Me personally I couldn't get out fast enough and had no desire to make a career of it but if I did I would have been an officer.
