Dear Elizabeth, Sarah and Brittany,
How are you? I am fine. I am not sure where to begin as it has been a long time since I saw you.

I guess I will start with things in the spring of 1990. I was going to school at Lowery Air Force Base for Calibrations in the Marine Corps. My job once I graduated was to calibrate all types of measuring devices, like multi-meters, power supplies, torque wrenches, depth gauges etc. Sounds boring, but I had fun doing it.

While I was at school, Iraq invaded Kuwait. It was a really tense time for all of us. Not knowing who would be sent over there to fight and who would not. This phase of the war was called Desert Shield. I finished up school and reported to MCAS El Toro, California, to MAG46. (I was the active duty Marine that would provide instruction and support for the Reserve Marines when they reported for their monthly duty. As it turns out due to Desert Shield, I was temporarily assigned to MCC3. A third level calibrations facility. While I was there, the unit I was assigned to was ordered over seas to Saudi Arabia. Since I did not “officially” belong to them I was asked if I would like to go over. After some thought I decided to go. (This was my job and as a Marine I had to go. Your mom could explain why)

As it turns out though, the unit I belonged to would not let me go. They told me they were waiting for their activation orders and did not want to hunt me down. So there I was, wearing one uniform a week, with all my equipment and clothing packed in my two sea bags (duffle bags) We finally attacked Iraqi forces and won the war. During this time, Steven Kyle Scott was born (May of 1991).

In September of 1991 I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and returned to college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to finish my engineering degree. It was hard as I could only work part time. I spent most of my waking hours studying (as things don’t come easy to me) I took up body building and did ok. I didn’t compete really until I got out of school.

During school, I worked at George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA. There I worked for three months on an infrared camera, and the structural support for the AXAF Telescope that was launched a few years ago. It was really fun and I hope to become an astronaut someday. It is a very competitive field to get selected for.

After NASA I returned to school and graduated with a 3.0 (B average)in Aerospace Engineering. That was a lot of work, but it was worth it. I decided to go for my PhD, unless I got a job before school started that fall. I was accepted to U of A in Tucson, AZ. Well, I got a job at Raytheon in Wichita, KS. It was a very different place to live compared to where I had lived in the past. Very flat, very windy and very cold in the winter. We also had tornados too! While I was at Raytheon I went to the Sheriff’s Reserve Academy and became a certified law enforcement officer. (I will tell you more about that in a bit) I attended Wichita State University to start on my master’s degree in Physics (astronomy), but could not get into it like I had at Embry-Riddle. After two semesters I was burnt out from school.

While I was at Raytheon I worked on the Premier I Business jet as a structural design engineer. I designed the Windshield and side windows on the jet. It was a really interesting design and one that Raytheon had never used before. The airplane was mostly carbon fiber composite (fabric and glue) with conventional metal wings. After a year at Raytheon I left and went to work for Boeing Commercial Airplane Group in Wichita Kansas. I took a couple of months off and during that time Darian was born (September 1996).

Right after I went to work for Boeing I was sent to Everett Wa, to work on the engine struts for the 747X. After I had been up there for two months they cancelled that program and I returned to Wichita. There I worked on the 737 Next Generation aircraft analyzing floor beams and floor panels to make sure they were strong enough to do their job. After working on the commercial side for a while I transferred to the military side in Wichita. There I worked on KC135’s doing stress analysis. It was pretty cool. We got to climb inside the planes and in the wings and anywhere else we could fit. I also found out I am a bit claustrophobic. I was climbing inside the center fuel tank to look at a damaged fitting when I found out. It was very dark, very small and you had to climb through sever openings not much wider than me. (I weighed 215 pounds then as I had been body building for a while) While I was climbing in there I suddenly got really frightened that I wouldn’t be able to turn around to get out and would get stuck. So, I backed out and never went back. (go figure a Marine that got scared) Anyway, I then worked on Air force 1, Air force 2, and the C-40 cargo plane. I did all kinds of structural analyses by hand and using finite element modeling (numerical technique using a computer to solve problems not easily done by hand) My official job is Stress Analyst.

Back to being a Sheriff’s Deputy. I graduated from the academy July of 1996. I then had to do three months of work in the jail before I could start going on patrol to become road certified to go by myself. While working at the jail, I saw all kinds of stuff, some funny, some not. It was a real learning experience for me and I made a lot of friends. While there, I met a city police officer who said I could come out with him when he went on patrol. So I did. And we did all kinds of things, like catching people selling drugs, and arsonists, etc. Some of the best times though were when we would serve search warrants on houses. Your adrenaline really gets going sometimes.

After my three months in the jail was up, I started my training to get road certified.. During this time, my friend and supervisor was killed by a suspect for no reason. I can remember the call on the radio, the panic in the other Deputy’s voice’s and how I and my training Deputy dropped what we were doing to go and help. We were only a mile down the road. When we got there, they had just got the suspect arrested and I went in to help with Sgt Snider. Unfortunately he had already passed away.

About three weeks later I was certified to go out on patrol on my own. I was really nervous. Here I was in a squad car with the authority to arrest people and take them to jail. I could write traffic tickets and do all kinds of other things. It was really cool, especially when you got to use the lights and sirens. I felt really good too as I was helping people. We were their, counselors, moms and dads, father confessor and sometimes the person that had to take them to jail. After another year, I met my friend Wayne Ruffner He is the Gang Task Force Deputy. A very nice person who invited me to start riding with him. Shortly after that I was also a gang Deputy. It was fun. In fact, my first official car chase is on tv. I and Wayne were really bored one night while on patrol (nothing was happening) and we looked at each other and decided that we needed a car chase. (careful what you wish for) Well a few minutes later we got into one. The suspect wrecked his truck (which was stolen) and I had to chase the driver who jumped from his truck while it was going 40 miles per hour. I chased him on foot for about 200-300 yards before I caught him. We took him to jail and spent the next 5 hours doing paper work.

I also taught in the Reserve Sheriff’s Academy. I taught the patrol tactics portion. This involved teaching the recruits how to perform a car stop (very fun), how to search and clear a building (very intense), how to interview a suspect, and officer survival.

While I was in Kansas, we had a tornado that went through Haysville, KS. It is right next to Wichita (where I lived) and it destroyed a good portion of the town. I also, was in the Kansas Army National Guard. Not very fun after being in the Marines. They had neither discipline nor much enthusiasm. It was actually kind of scary knowing that I could go to war with these people and I could not trust but maybe 10 out of 100 or more.

Well, I worked for Boeing until the spring of 2000. I then decided to become a contract engineer as that was the only way to make more money and buy a house. I initially started in Montreal Canada. Talk about a different culture. While I was there I worked for Bombardier Aerospace. I was responsible for reviewing the stress analysis reports for completeness and accuracy. I worked there for six weeks before coming back to Arizona.

Just before I went to Canada I bought my first house. It is in Anthem Arizona. A two story house with a small backyard. We also, bought a couple of dogs. A Great Dane and a Neapolitan Mastiff. I also just got an English Bulldog puppy. He is very funny to watch run around and trip on himself.

After Canada I then went to work for Boeing in Everett Washington as a contract engineer on the 777-200 section 46 fuselage frames. It was very interesting. I did not like living in Washington as it is very expensive and very wet! I worked there from July to December 2000 when I moved to Phoenix and started working for MDHelicopters. My house had been done since September of 2000. Jami and the kids moved in then. I moved in when I got back from Everett, WA.

The helicopters I work on are the MD900 Explorer, MD500, MD600. These helicopters are unique as they do not have a tail rotor. They use a tail boom that has two slots in it that air is blown out of and that with the main rotor downwash causes the force necessary to keep the helicopter from spinning in circles at low speeds. At higher speeds the slots lose efficiency and a thruster on the tail which uses the same air provides the force necessary to keep the helicopter from spinning. I am responsible for the structural analysis of these helicopters.

Since being back in Arizona, I have become a football coach for Pop Warner football and trying to open up a hobby store in the community where I live. It is very difficult.

Some of my hobbies and interests are astronomy, drag racing and NASCAR, I enjoy physics and have started to really like ancient Roman history. I also, build plastic scale models and I am currently working on the Saturn V spacecraft that took the astronauts to the moon and on the USS Defiant (from Star Trek, Deep Space Nine.) I am also getting ready to build some really large shelves to fill in a niche in the family room. That is going to be the game room.

I am also an amateur photographer and like to take pictures of action events, sports, racing and air shows. I also like nature and landscape shots as well.

Well, I guess that is pretty much what I have been doing with myself.

Elizabeth, Sarah, and Brittany, I also want to tell you that I have always had you in my thoughts. Every day you have been there. I also wanted to let you know that what I did in letting Mark adopt you I did because I felt it was the best thing I could do for you. You lived very far away and I being in the Marines, was not able to see you like I wanted to. I felt that the best thing for you was to have a family that was always there for you, that you did not have to wonder whether or not I was going to be coming out to see you or if you were coming to see me. I did it because I love you and I wanted the best for you. I knew that Mark would be a good father to you and would always look out for you and your mom. I hope you understand my reasoning, but I don’t expect you to though and I understand if you don’t. I want you to know that I love you and always will. I hope that someday we can finally see each other again.

Kim,
I really appreciate your phone call. It was nice to talk to you after so long. I wrote the letter like we discussed and I hope that I have not said anything that I should not. I did not sign the letter as I did not know what I should put. I want to sign it dad, but I also do not want to upset the girls or you. So I left it up to you as to how it should be signed for now. Whatever you put, whether it is dad or chesty is I will understand why. I hope that someday we can become friends again and that I and the girls will be able to see each other and start fresh. I know that you have always looked out for their best interest and that Mark has as well.

I am really nervous about this. Not knowing how they will accept me, if at all. Whatever their decision is I will accept that.

You may call me at anytime or write to me if you have any questions or would like to tell me something. I have included some pictures of myself for you to give to them if you think it ok.

I am not trying to sound weird or anything, I just don’t want to say or do anything at this point to upset you or the girls. I hope you understand. I also want to apologize for the last letter that I sent to you. Your right I was angry and upset, but I was wrong. I am sorry.

My address is . My cell number is , my work is and my home number is .

I hope that the letter is okay with you. Anything that you feel not appropriate, you can delete it or send it back and I will rewrite it for you.

Sincerely,
chesty

This will sound strange to some, but this is the only place where I can say the things I can tell no one else. I truly have very few friends that would understand and even less family that would. I don't expect any one to feel sorry for me and I wouldn't.

But even though I have never seen any of you and only talked to one on the phone I consider most here my friends and find people more real than not.

Anyway, I don't post things like this often, but I had to get it out in the open as best I could.

We shall see what comes of these letters. I will let you all know what does finally happen.

I am really scared of the future.

Does anyone remember the last scenes in Gladiator? Where Maximus fights Comodus? From there till the end of the movie is exactly what I have been living for over the last 11 years. To finally get my revenge on him (for taking my family away)and then be able to go home to my family.

The future might be scary, but you never know if you don't try.

You missed the first part of their lives, but you still have a chance to be there for them. It will probably take a lot of time and energy on the part of everybody envolved, but it can work out. Just don't expect any sudden miricles. A lot of time has passed and there is going to be some anger and resentment on their part and your's.
Deal with it and talk about it, don't hide it and pretend that it will go away.

Good luck.

I can't imagine not seeing my children for as long as you have. It would absolutely kill me. I think your letter is evident that you have finally come to terms as to what happened to cause this seperation from your kids. I also believe that you are sincere in your attempts to correct the past. I believe you know this will not be easy and there will be some resentment and a tremendous amount of emotion dealing with this. Your attempts are commendable and I hope things work out for you and your children. As many people have expressed, you can't correct the past but you can become a part of their future. Good luck and prayers are with you!

You're a good man Chesty!

I pray your ex does all she can to help you back into their lives. Once there, a child's love is 4-ever........

This made me cry......

Again, thanks, As I have said, this is the only family I have that I can confide in.

I actually have a double life, the one I let people see and the one when I am alone. Two very different people, but the only way I can survive. I personally wish I could be the person when I am alone all the time. He is like that in the letters above.

I hope that changes soon.

Otherwise I am the usual, pain in the ass, guy, who won't show a shred of emotion to anyone. Guess that is part of what caused the problem in the past.
