Boxing - Sugar Ray Robinson I'd say. You could make arguments for Ali, the light-weight Roberto Duran and possibly Willie Pep.
MMA - hard to call with only 20 years officially in the books but I'd say Silva for now. I think Jones will probably surpass him at some point.

Ok ok..Respect for your good natured response, and in all seriousness you should look up some old vale tudo stuff. Also if you don't know Helio Gracie's history, it will be some interesting reading for you.
Also..Look up the roots of the UFC. It was actually started by the Gracie's to showcase BJJ. The evolution has brought it well beyond that, but all cool history.

What you are not forgetting, because you obviously don't know, is that UFC is the evolution of NHB/Vale Tudo. UFC started with very limited rules and there were thousands of challenge matches before then where these TMA guys had plenty of chances to showcase these uber bad ass secret moves that all the dungeons and dragons nerds dream about today. That never happened. Sorry to shit on your fantasy.

They still had rules, rings, etc. No eye gouging, no biting. Keith Hackney was TMA with some street tough in him and he won. It's not like it was as open and shut as you say. A lot of wrestlers did well back in the VT days. Today's BJJ work much more on dealing with takedowns if they are training for MMA. Back then they just assumed they'd get the TD. And they were right, except against wrestlers. But the wrestlers had no subs.

If you go by the definition of a martial art, Muay Thai is a martial art, and its proven very effective.

And the UFC of today, is most definitely a sport. It's less an "evolution" than a "commercialization".

Still fun to watch, don't get me wrong. And as the Brazilians always say they have a lot of "tough guys". Very good athletes.

Not sure what your point it? My post that you quoted was in response to some guy saying that there are tons of TMA masters out there that would kill the UFC guys (or something like that). Is your point that you believe that as well?

Yes Muay Thai is a martial art, and so is BJJ, wrestling..etc...etc...

And you stated the early UFC rules, but I stated that there were lots of NHB fights long before the UFC ever existed. Maybe you don't know what NHB stands for?
