The 500lb Deadlift Video

Shades McCool

New member
Well it finally happened today. For those of you who don't follow my log, I started the linear 5x5 workout 5 weeks ago. I started deadlifting two weeks before that and my goal was a 500lb deadlift. So today on week 7 I pulled it.

Thanks to Mike for the good competition.

Now to the video:

500x1:

Lockout was slow....oh and you form Nazis keep in mind this was a true maximal effort and my working weight form is much crisper.

I followed up with 405x5 (PR by 15lbs). I'll post that video later.

Here it is:

The form is off due to the fact that this is post 500 and I am tired. I know I shouldn't set the weight down like that but it was tough to think and I usually don't do that.

Comments please!!

I weigh probably around 186 and I am not and have not used gear. Oh and I am 23.

Shades great lift. It was solid and the form was fine....actually, I thought the form was better and the lift looked easier than the 485 last week. Great stuff and congrats. Also, lol, you need to go to your profile and change your location to "strapping in for the first 5 minutes of my vids".....seriously though awesome work.

Thanks T. I'll tell you what. I am done with 1RM deadlifting for a while. I am going to let myself develop through 5 repping for a while. 525 is next!

Great work, Shades. Great work. That's a heckuva' lift. Period.

Now, I'd really like to see you do the 5x405 w/out straps. Have you tried w/out 'em?
Not yet but I can certainly give it a go! Thanks for the kind words!

dude that was great. I was expecting a much bigger guy to step up to that bar then I saw you and said no way -- looked like you could have gone 2 or 3 more reps bro...keep it up...

Shades you strong little a-hole. Now I have to get up par with you lol :P
Hope I can dead 500lbs by Xmas. Right now I weigh 174lbs and dead 320lbs.
Got a little 2 go, but still 6 months :)
By the end of October, I will definetaly be deadlifting 374lbs.

I am 18, no gear usage btw, similar profile as you.
WELL DONE MAN, I LOVED THAT VID !

Cheers Shades

Screw 525, i think you had another Rep in you on the shoot for 540-550 =]

Besides, my gym has a show in october, my weight class deadlift is at 542 i think, and i want it =]

good work again!

Yeah buddy that may be something we can talk about later. Like I said earlier, I kinda want to take a vacation from one rep deadlifts. I am going to stick with the 5 rep range for a month or so before I pull for another big 1RM.

DEF Me too, im liking this 5x5 routine, prob gonna run another one.

So ill def train the 5 rep. So my single has to get real strong. Lets build up the 5 rep max =]

whenever u want.

GREAT JOB BRO, HONESTLY YOU NAILED THE 500.

very nice, good lift for someone your size - yep, I would take some time off singles for the next month or so, maybe even switch out deads for a while to give your body a chance to recover for the next session. Pulling max singles weekly can burn you out more than you might realize.

box squats will help you break the bar with your legs if you focus on them for a few months.

i'm not saying that he won't ever get 600, but making the jump from a 500lb deadlift to a 600lb deadlift, is a hell of a lot harder than going from a 400lb deadlift to a 500lb deadlift.

First off, thanks for winning me some K, sorry MM :)

2nd, great lift but what's wrong with you?

That has to be the most quiet deadlift PR in the history of the deadlift. lol Make some noise next time and screw the tight asses that say you can't drop the weight, you just deadlifted 500lbs you have certain rights now.

Also try some chalk for you 5 reppers, I bet you don't need those straps with your mixed grip.

Very true - not that I would know, but if Il says it and it is about DL I agree!

So you didn't drop the plates hard, throw your hands up in the air w/ a big YEAAAAHHHH! and run a victory lap around the gym???

Shades McCool said:
That would be tough.

well, ya know, youll have to gain some weight due to the stress, but itll be minimal, id say if u gain 5 or so pounds, u can pull another 100 pounds.

good job on 500, looks like you didnt have to struggle to much either..

get siked up alittle your get annother 20lbs out of that lift

I think u got 520 in the bag with a little grunting and a crowd.

When i did 425x5 the crowd is what helped me hit it. Nothing like seeing people in AWE right.

Next time i want u to take bets, go around the gym and let them know ur about to deadlift 500+, see how much u can win lol

Some dude came up to me before he started curling the power rack next to me and asked "Just what are you doing to do with that weight?". I said deadlift and he said "Oh." That was that. I think that was the first time that much weight had ever been on any bar in that gym - it has only been open since May of '05.
