Tanning beds are they safe?

notpuff

New member
Hi, who here uses tannign beds are they safe? And anyone know of a website where i can buy Bulbs for tannign lamps

i mean is it more dangerous then regular sun? and is there any protection to use whiel still getting as tan on a bed?

Is anything REALLY safe? I mean, take Jello for instance. It seems perfectly harmless, what with its perpetual seductive and erotic jiggling - which reminds me that I have to buy some Jello on my way home from work. BUT, if one were to cram a significant amount up, say, The Almighty's poop shoot then one could seriously do him harm.

Tanning beds are more dangerous than regular sun. You should take precautions (sunscreens and stuff) no matter which one though. The real danger is getting burnt. That is actually damage to your body and puts you at an elevated risk of developing something like skin cancer. As with all things, moderation and safety precautions are the key.

The whole point of UV tanning is so that the DNA in your skin cells will get damaged and promote melanogenesis (which creates more melanin pigments) to protect itself from further damage. You cannot get around that with this method of tanning.

the "jury" is still out on whether tanning bed are worse, as bad or better than regular sun exposure.. of course the percentages, wavelengths and # of UV rays exposed to in natural sunlight varies considerabley..

most evidence would indicate that in general tanning beds are safer.. partly becuase of the ability to control exposure to a MUCH greater degree and partly because the most damaging rays, short wavelength, are not produced by beds.

I just bought a tanning bed 2 months ago and use dark tanning oil with no sunscreen I know its not good but if you use that cream they reccomend it will take alot more tanning, with oil i can get dark in 2 sessions. You have to clean the glass very well after but it will get you dark quick ,but no telling what its doing to me , oh well no telling what the stuff I'm injecting is doing either lol

I dont know how safe it is to lay 5 inchs from an ultra violet light. But hell i do it about 3 times a week so fuck it. I mean I inject fuckin shit into my ass on a weekly basis so I think the tanning issue isnt a real big concern. And ya you should be able to find several places where you'd be able to pick up some bulbs just do a search.:11shot:

My first time tanning killed the nerves above my dick and now when the ladies touch me there i feel nothing (wheras before it felt great when a girl touched me there). Also i was stupid enough to try tanning again some time after that. The second time I got a very bad sunburn and my eyes were damaged, so that i need to wear glasses now, and at night the lights each look like the sun, so that it's hard to see jack shit.
Why the fuck tanning salons are still legally operating is beyond me. For the sake of common health they should be banned.

I believe there is no clear-cut answer due to the fact that lots and lots of $$$ would be lost if the truth came out that tanning beds are a much higher risk than natural sun tanning.

I'm going off of common sense here. I would stay outside in the sun for an hour, but I wouldn't dare lay in a bed for an hour. How can something that damages the skin so badly in such a short amount of time be even half-way safe? But like with everything else I do, there's always risks............:(

this is very unfortunate.. but also VERY.. VERY unusual. Most people have little if an adverse reaction to indoor tanning. Though as with anything, abnormal reactions are possible..

you should consult a lawyer.. sounds like you might have case..

IMPORTANT NOTE- the type and condition of bulbs is VERY IMPORTANT.. some less reputable places use cheap bulbs and let them run until completely worn out.. this is REALLY bad.. these people greatly increase the health risk of indoor tanning

note- if this is the case with you (the bad buld, cheap bulbs place) it makes your case a LOT BETTER..

Hard call....

I've heard it's safer and that it's worse.

All I know is this....

Before I used a tanning bed, I layed out in the sun w/o sunscreen for 1 hour (30min/side) to try and work on a tan. It's time-consuming, hot, and not always convienient.

Now, I use a tanning bed. I go to a place that has what looks like well-maintained equipment. Max exposure time is 20 min. I use a tan accelerator, and I get better results from doing that once every 7-10 days than I ever got from natural sunlight.

A healthy tan is not bad for you. Trying to change your ethnicity via tanning is bad for you. If you go to get the best natural tan your body will produce with sensible exposure, I honestly think your risks are no worse, in fact, they're likely better. The key is to avoid burning.

You'll hear tons of stuff on both sides. My research indicated that early tanning beds were much more dangerous, but newer designs (when used responsibly) were safer than trying to tan via natural sunlight.

Kinda like juice. If you use it responsibly, you can get great results with marginal risks (as everything has risk). Take too much for too long and you're asking for trouble sooner or later.

I don't even bother with regular tanning beds. See if you can find a place that has a sunless spray machine, or a person to airbrush it on you...it looks suprisingly good, I get dark in 1 session, and it's much safer and quicker.

I went to a different tanning salon about 1 month ago to find that you could only tan one side at a time and you had to do it for 40 minutes! These new beds are supposedly much safer than the traditional ones and you can go everyday for 80 minutes if you want. If anyone knows anything about these, please respond.

If you got a sunburn from a tanning bed, you stayed in WAY too long. The staff should have talked you out of staying in that long. And your eyes -- why weren't you wearing the special goggles they provide to protect your eyes?

The butt and genitals very rarely get sun so they burn VERY easily. That's why I always tan wearing posing briefs and I don't get burned.

Rather than banning tanning salons, maybe folks like you should learn what the hell you're doing. (I'm still tripping on the fact you tanned without goggles ... what were you thinking!)

Ercole, I never wear goggles, just keep my eyes closed but I guess that's pretty stupid. The guy who owns my tanning salon actually tells each individual what bed they are to go in and for how long. He keeps track of what you did last and always asks questions to see what bed fits you best. It's the first place I have been to that actually cares about there customers and not just trying to sell the most costly package and lotions.

Yeah it could have been cheap bulbs. It happened about 3 years ago and when i joined i had to sign alot of disclaimers and waivers etc. so i didn't think i had a leg to stand on in court.

That's some fucked up shit....never heard that before (the killing of the nerves)

Hope that NEVER happens to me (I've been using beds for about 10 months)

Peace!

I like the stand-up one that cooks you in 12 minutes. I was at the beach once with a guy from Ireland, blond hair, pale as fuck, and all we did was walk down and back to look at the wimmins. The guy burned, blistered and peeled like a Hiroshima victim. If you are one of those people who gets burned by moonlight you have no business in the sun or in a sunbed, every one else can take their chances and not worry too much.

Sounds like you've found a good place. I go to Rio Tan in Venice, owned and operated by superbodybuilder Joe DeAngelis and his tall, lovely wife Helle. (BTW their baby is the most buffed infant I've ever seen.)

Without goggles don't you burn your eyelids to a crisp? I know I would. I remember once I burned my eyelids, outside in the sun. It was painful and they swelled up so I could hardly open my eyes. My advice: use the goggles every time!:D

I'm pretty sure it was just 5 minutes. And I did wear the "protective" lotion they gave me.

i was.

You're right, if i had known what i was doing [to myself] when i got into that tanning bed, i would not have done so to begin with.

I tried that, but the sock kept falling off. I suppose I have really big feet. Or maybe........................:(

Skin cancer is one of those areas that is highly studied and many opinions are available.

My favorite study (since I'm of Norse decent) was done on Blonde, blue-eyed, fair skinned individuals and found that regular exposure to UV-A and/or UV-b (b being the safer of the two) reduced the chance of burning during excessive exposure (i.e. your vacation) and reduced the incidence of skin cancer to thier peers by over 30%.

So, regular mild tanning for those of us that are fair will keep your chances of melanoma development lower than if you did not at all.

Good stuff!

I read they both have about the same risk

incorrect! i manage a salon. the uv rays in the sun are not controlled and the uv rays from a bed are. you have a better chance of burning in the outdoor sun because its not regulated and you dont know what exact time to stop exposuer but in a bed you can graudally work your way up to the max exposure time avoiding a buyn along the way. a sunburn is more easily attained out doors under the unregulated combonation of uv rays, and this causes moderate skin damage, making one more succeptable to the formation of cancerous cells.

the eyelid is one of the thinnest external membranes on the body and UV rays can easliy penetrate this and damage your retna. thats why the state's health dept requires tanning salons to provide gogles and recomend you wear them. you man not have problems yet but if you do it for a long time you will eventually will. i know one personally who had to have major eve surgery for that reason................wear em man, it wont hurt you!!!!!

I didn’t read through everyone’s posts, but I think the answer is pretty clear.

Are artificial tanning beds safe? No. Are they safer than sun tanning? I think the answer is Yes simply because it’s a controlled environment.

After all, how many people lie on the beach for just 12 minutes and then get up and go home?

Dunno but moderation is the key. That's why I'll usually go once/twice a week for 10 minutes. That's enough for me. I dont need to look like Hogan...... lol

My girl works at a tanning salon and they definatley are supposed to know their shit. Tanning is a good way to prevent sunburn in natural sun by allowing you to get a base tan, which in this case, is healthy. Tanning, in general is not that bad for you, but it will lead to premature aging and skin cancer. There has been research over and over again to prove this. Just go to a knowledgeable tanning salon and listen to them. They should be able help you out. I tan year round and all I see is a few more brown spots. To each his own, just check with your doc of you are really concerned. Good luck! :)

Sun beds are safer in the respect that you are exposed to a select spectrum of UV rays, yet it still involves bombarding your skin with a lot of UV radiation - or else you would not damage the DNA, and thus your body would not need a tan.

If you want a tip for outdoor tanning, mind the fact that your optic nerve is actually connected to the pituitary gland (which is the source of your MSH production - Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone) this essentially means that it reacts to light. Therfore you could actually burn more and tan less by having sunglasses on all the time.

This doesn't mean that you should keep them off and damage your eyes, just take the glasses off (for a couple seconds) every couple minutes to get a complete spectrum of light.

There are beds that are safer than others and they usualy cost more to use. The place I go to the beds were designed by a dermitologest and I believe to be much better for you then natural tanning. You must be sure to use a good lotion to keep your skin moist for this will help you get darker.

I think it also depends on your heritage. I have a lot of portugese and i tan with very dark olive skin. I burn SLIGHTLY at first, then get very dark. Caucasion burn easily and are more prone to develop skin cancer cuz they produce less melanin.
